“ Manufacturer: Disney / Type: Cars „
Handy Manny, the local fix it man of sheetrock hills town is a fantastic bi-lingual (english and spanish) cartoon on Playhouse Disney. My 2 year old loves it, it teaches you all about working together to get jobs done, Manny has a variety of talking tools, but Turner the flat head screwdriver is the tool featured with this toy.
The car itself is quite small, around 15 cm, smaller than I had first thought. Handy Manny is fixed into the car, a feature which my son has found quite annoying! Turner the scredriver sits in a slot on the back of the car and is removed and put into a spare tyre on the back, you need to turn him to wind up the car. Turning him does prove difficult for children, he doesnt fit in very deep and so keeps slipping out and is quite hard to turn, so this is mainly a job for older children or mums and dads! Once you have wound the toy up you push Manny's head down and the car accelerates. It goes better on a hard floor surface rather than carpet as with most push and go toys.
Overall, this is a good toy for fans of Handy Manny, but although the box states for ages 3+ I think maybe 4+ is more realistic if you want your child to do it themselves. It is a very robust toy, my son has crashed it into walls many times and it still looks like new.
The price is quite steep for what it is, around £15, but will please any child who watches the show!
If you are not a frequent watcher of Playhouse Disney then you may not have encountered the phenomenon which is Handy Manny - the friendly handy man with the talking tools which keeps town of Sheetrock Hills ticking nicely. We discovered him when CBeebies started to lose favour with little man, I decided to try and convert him into a disneyaholic like his Mum!! 6 months on Little Man is a huge Handy Manny fan as well as being car mad, so when I saw the Tune up and Go car in the Disney Store for £10, a fiver off the normal price I decided to get this for him.
The toy consists of a red plastic car, which is about 15 cms long, with a fixed Handy Manny sitting inside it, and comes with a miniature Turner the Screwdriver. The idea is that you use Turner to tune up the car by turning the socket it the wheel on the back of the car, and then you press Manny down and the car goes shooting off across the room!! There is a little slot in the top of the car to store Turner when he is not tuning the car!
This toy is meant for children aged 3+ and I bought this for little man knowing that he was a bit young for it at 22 months (18 months when purchased). He understands to put the screwdriver in the slot, put doesn't quite have the ability to turn it enough to make it go - luckily he has a mummy and daddy who are quite happy to do this bit for him - but he does give it a good try which I feel will improve his hand eye co-ordination in the long run! He gets all excited while it is being wound, and then loves to hit Manny on the head and watch him shoot off, as he does go quite fast. He also makes quite a bang when he runs into things which never fail to make him laugh!!
Handy Manny Tune Up & Go is made by Fisher Price, so it is robust and hard wearing. I have found that some tv spin off toys have been a complete disappointment, but this is certainly not the case here. Despite Manny being on all sorts of adventures, round the garden and driven into furniture he still looks as good as new. However, I do think that he is a bit pricey for the money, as it is basically a push and go car which would probably be less than half price if it had not been Handy Manny. However as I got it for a third off the price, it was worth it to see little man's eyes light up at a toy featuring his favourite handyman!! Available from the Disney Store or Online at www.disneystore.co.uk - currently at £15
