We found it very difficult to come across these hauler sets for my sons Christmas presents. EBay was the only place I was able to find the full set. This was the cheapest I was able to find any of the sets for £25. There were ones available on Amazon but at £80 a time this was as little far for Santa to stretch too. I was very excited when this arrived and took a look at it straight away. I have to admit I was a little disappointed. For the £25 we had received a tiny truck which was much smaller in size compared to the Mack variations we own. Still, I knew that my son would be over the moon so away it was packed away for Christmas morning. The set we own is the #28 Nitroade racing team.
On opening it he was very excited. The Pitty and car are both made out of metal so are very durable. The truck itself is made out of plastic but it is very sturdy and despite being dropped a number of times it is still in perfect condition. The car has moving wheels so it can be pushed along the floor which of course is vital for racing! The pit stop car is just for back ground use as he has no moving features. He has little metal forks at the front of him to pick things up with, but again this is only for pretend play. The whole set is very well detailed and so my son was able to recognise them straight away. While this is not a hugely known character my son was still delighted with it.
The truck itself is as I mentioned before very small inside. To open the cargo part of the truck you can lift the sides of the truck up so it opens the whole of the cargo unit up. There is a small stand to be put down for it to rest on the floor. I did think it may be difficult to open and close the cargo holder as it is so small in size, but all three of my children are able to do this without any problems. The cab does not open at all, but then it does not on any hauler that we own from the series.
Inside the truck are small tyres and tools that are attached to the bottom of the truck and do not come away which is good as they do not become lost. They are perfect for pretending to fix up the racing car with the Pitty, but they do take up valuable room in the already small truck. Then you can pull the platform out a little and there is a ramp that can come down the side. This is perfect to both load the cars, and so the pit stop car can get on and off quickly to fix up Lightning or Nitroade.
You can only fit two cars in the truck at a time which my son found a little disappointing. As it is so simple it is perfect for getting your child's imagination working. Other than opening and closing the cargo part of the truck, my son has to make his own fun which is actually really refreshing. Despite no fancy features he can play for hours making up different scenarios for the set to take part in. We do find it is more fun using other cars and accessories we own, but it can be used full by itself. As he has the full racing team I find he enjoys making stories with these three pieces as the star of the show. He has so many different cars pieces I was worried this may become lost in favour of more popular characters, but having the full set definitely works in its favour.
The Pitty is more of a decoration piece as it does not do anything but is perfect for role play. My son loves that it can fix the car up when it comes to a pit stop, and really doesn't mind that he has to make believe with it rather than it actually having any interactive features. The truck can also be pushed along the floor which is essential for his imagination to make up stories. We have found that like other haulers we the cab comes away from the main cargo unit. While it does come away from the cargo unit, as it is smaller than other we own it is not compatible for swapping which is a shame. It can still be dismantled for easy loading, and if you had others in the same range I suspect from the fastening they would be compatible.
We have owned this for over five months now and it has been dropped and crashed a number of times. There are no scratches or damages at all and the whole set has proved to be child friendly. My son does not mind that it is a third of the size of his other haulers and thoroughly enjoys making up stories based around it. While it is not an overly known character from the film, my cars mad son was still able to recognise it straight away. There are a huge amount of different racing teams available so you should be able to find one to suit your child.
While it was a little pricey at £25 for the small truck we received, I found that my son loved having the matching car and Pitty. His face lit up at having all three items from the whole set and he really does love it. Out of all the cars accessories he owns this is one that gets used the most. It is perfect for pushing little ones imagination and has received hours of play. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a full play set for their child. You can find it for sale on eBay, but it also seems to drop in and out of sale on Amazon marketplace. We had managed to find other trucks for just £5 in our local XS stock store, but none came with the accessories.
