      A nice little Bertie Bus

Our little Bertie the Bus is one of the range of Ertl die-cast model cars and trains that replicate characters from the well loved Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends series of tv programmes and films.

Bertie has a nice friendly way about him which is reflected in his open and approachable expression. His little face is modelled from a light coloured grey plastic. Even though there is not too much room for lots of details on the small panel that makes up his face, his little eyes are highlighted in black and his smile has a white effect to show where his teeth would be.

      **********************************************************
The wheels on this little Bertie the Bus really do go round and round. His wheels are made from a light but durable black plastic and have a red matching centre where the spokes should be. The under body of the bus is protected by a good quality black plastic and this helps to keep Berties wheels in place. Berties main colour is a smart and bright pillar box red.

We have used Bertie on some flat pile carpet style play mats and he seems happy to run about on that type of surface. He is very often running back and forth helping out the little engines in our collection to pick up stranded passengers when things go wrong. He will also work really well on smooth laminate floors and similar flat surfaces. He doesn't cope well with thicker pile carpets.

      **********************************************************
The detail on Bertie is rather simple, with most of it coming from his simple shape which mimics an older style bus. The windows and door on the bus are imprinted onto it, although some versions of Bertie also came with stickers for these parts rather than being imprinted as they are on our Bertie.

You can clearly see the bus driver from both the front and side view. He is sitting up at the wheel concentrating on getting his passengers safely from A to B. I rather like the way that you can even see small details like his long handle bar black moustache and his drivers cap.

      **********************************************************
The rest of the windows on the bus show a lady wearing a flower topped hat, an older gentleman with receding grey hair and a small child, with a ponytail looking out of the back window.

The door of the little bus is printed on so does not open, which is a shame, it would have been nice if it had been fully working. However the majority of other Ertl die cast models are not made in this way, so I guess this is in keeping with that.

      **********************************************************
Berties happy personality is something that comes to the fore when children use him for role play activities along with the other Ertl Thomas models. He gets along well with his fellows and is very helpful and I feel that this can teach children the importance of doing the same.

The paint work on Bertie has not lasted quite as well as it has on our other Ertle die cast toys and this is in part due to Bertie having been flung at high speed across the garden paving , where he was a little chipped. This is unusual and our other models have in the main remained chip and blemish free.

      **********************************************************
In terms of rating this little Ertl bus, I feel that whilst he is nice, he doesn't offer the amount of intricate details that some of the other models do. I feel this does effect how he ought to be rated as part of the range of models and so I feel that he is worthy of a 3 star rating.

One thing that ought to be mentioned is that due to small parts these models are only suitable for children over 4 years old.
