There are two versions of this toy available one with sounds and one without. The one I will be reviewing is the vehicle and figure without sounds. Tom is part of the mountain rescue team of the popular children's TV show fireman Sam. With this set you receive the car itself and a Tom figure.
The truck is a very good size for little one to hold with a push and go system so if little one pulls the truck back a few times it will zoom across the room which both my boys really enjoyed. It has a roof rack on the top with cases and such stuck to it, doors that open and close very easily and a spare wheel on the back of the truck. It is nice and bright in yellow and resembles Tom's truck from the TV show very well so it is instantly recognisable to any fireman Sam fan.
Although my children like to use it with their other entire fireman Sam toys this can be used on its own. It is not something that has to have accessories to be enjoyable, and there are a number of occasions my children will sit and play with this one their own. As it has the push and go system it means it travels a lot further across the floor than other simple push cars, which is a great appeal to my children they race it with our peppa pig push and go car.
They toy is a great size not so big that it is difficult to hold but big enough to hold little ones attention. It works well on carpet as well as wooden flooring with my children either using the push and go function or they can push it along themselves not having to let go of the car while using it to play. They use it with fireman Sam toys but also while making up other story's so is not limited in uses.
We find that the figure provided with this toy is a little larger than the sets of figures we have previously owned. There is space in the truck for tom to sit but my children found it a little difficult to get him in and out as he is a little larger. We tend to use the smaller Tom figure we received in the full set of characters we brought separately or the characters we received with our other fireman Sam vehicles. As they are a little smaller they are easier to get in and out and it, also means that Tom can have someone sit in the passenger seat so he is not lonely.
My children also noticed that the steering wheel on this vehicle actually spins round. It does not control the wheels but just the fact that they can spin in themselves was a big appeal as other similar cars, although they do have a steering wheel it is fixed and unmovable. I was a little worried the doors of the vehicle would come off after they had been opened and closed too many times as we find this is a common fault with fireman Sam toys but actually after many months of use they are still on.
The main downside to this toy is the wheels of the car, although they worked very well at first they can be very dangerous. They are made from rubber which at first I thought was great this helped with the push and go system, however one day my son was playing with the car and I noticed he had something in his hand. On closer inspection I noticed he had managed to pull the rubber wheels completely off, and although they are not overly small if he had put them to his mouth it could have been dangerous.
We do still have this as my children would not let me take it away as it would ruin their collection. It surprising it still works with no rubber on the tyres but it can be pushed along very easily. I have checked there is nothing else that can cause any danger, and my children are still happy with it minus the rubber on the wheels. The age range for this car is three plus which I can understand why after the wheels came off the truck, if this had been a smaller child that is still putting things straight to their mouth it could be dangerous, and for this reason you really do need to stick to the guidelines.
We purchased our Tom vehicle from B&M in a full fireman Sam vehicle set for £20 which works out around £5 per vehicle. There are different versions available from supermarkets, toy stores or online for between £5-£12. I would recommend sticking with the age recommendation of three years because the tyres are removable, and although they can be put back on easily enough I was worried about leaving them on as we have younger children in the house.
My children love it and whenever they are playing with their fireman Sam toys this does come out a lot. It has received a lot of play so has proved to be worth its money. A fireman Sam fan would love this a present, but I found that the price we paid was a little more reasonable for the version we received however I would have paid the higher retail price for the version with sound.
