      Great car toy, recommended

The Fisher Price Little People Spin & Crash Raceway is a massive hit in our house. I bought it for our son as a Christmas gift from Woolies (RIP) for £25.

It is basically a figure of eight race track for two little cars and it works by two spinning disks moving in opposite directions. You turn on the ignition key and the two disks spin around (quite loudly) for approximately thirty seconds before stopping automatically. The ignintion key sounds an engine strike up and the disks just make a noisy spinning noise when activated. There is a star shaped button to press that makes a crashing noise and an accelorater handle that sounds gear changing and increase in speed. In the pit stop area there is a little tyre changing type tool that has a button that when depressed makes a noise like the air compressed wheel nut guns at garages. I'm making it sound like this is a really noisy toy, it isn't that bad honest. I can cope with it so it must be ok.

You can push a car up the ramp into the pit stop area onto a ramp type platform for it's tyre change and re fuel and then once the essential maintenance is completed you lift up the platform that propells the car on to the race track. The cars (and anything else for that matter) go spinning around the track until the side panel is lifted to create a gap for the car to exit and travel down the ramp. Still not quite worked out if this is intended to be the finish line or not but my little boy loves this bit.

It comes with four flags that you need to pop into the holes, a trophy for the winning car, two cars with the Little People racing drivers that are removable (and in our house are well travelled away from the race track). It takes minimal assembly, you need to slot in the podium into position and insert 4 x C batteries and this is it. It took me all of one minute. It comes pre-stickered with chequered flags, podium people, crash barriers and arrows so you can practically take it from the box and play with it almost instantly.

My son (17 mths old) opened three presents before this and wasn't really interested. When he opened this he refused to be drawn from it to his other gifts. He played with it for a good half hour before we had to go out briefly, he insisted on taking a driver with him and was upset for the whole thirty minutes that we were out of the house. As soon as we arrived back in the house he ran through and sat playing with the racetrack again until lunchtime which must have been a good hour or more!

It has a recommeded age range from 2 to 5 years of age but my boy gets on fine with it. He hasn't worked out how to turn the ignition key yet or that the air gun tyre gizmo actually goes on the tyres but this doesn't fase him as he just puts it anywhere to make the sound. Everything else he can do with ease. There are no small parts that he could put in his mouth so I think that it could be suitable for younger children than recommended.

He is still fanatical about this now. It is the one Christmas toy that he plays with multiple times a day. I'm so glad that I was the one to buy this for him as he enjoys it so much!
