This set of first emergency vehicles from Orange Tree Toys is a set that we had for our first son and I have recently dug out ready for our second son. The set comprises of three vehicles a police car ambulance and a fire engine. They are all made from wood and painted with non-toxic paint so are nice and safe as often children are still experimenting with putting things in their mouths at this stage and I know my son gave them an odd chew without any damage to him or the cars. The toy cars are designed for children from 12 months onwards and I think this is the right age as they are nice and chunky to hold but younger children may struggle with them.
The police car is made up of two sections but is firmly held in place and despite looking like they could come apart in a jigsaw way they do not. My slight gripe with this is that the hole in the middle can get a bit grubby at times. We have a police car from the same makers in the London vehicle set and I prefer its curved one piece style and my son when he was younger found this easier to hold than this one. The siren on the top despite looking a little frail has remained undamaged throughout lots of play and being bumped in the toy box lots. The wooden wheels turn around great and give a nice smooth action as they are played with.
The fire engine is my least favourite item and has actually become easily damaged and the ladder has fallen off ours very easily which I personally find disappointing as my son had enjoyed swivelling the ladder around.
The ambulance is very similar to the police car and again is nice and robust and easy to hold and play with.
The set has been a great addition to the toy box and my son certainly enjoyed playing with them and using his imagination as they zoomed round the carpet to various emergencies. Initially they were just treated as a car to push around but as he got older and understood what they represented he started to make the various nee nar noises for sirens that children seem to do. I think they have been great for imaginative play. I would recommend these wooden toys for young children however be careful with the fire engine as they ladder is a bit fragile. The set gets 4 stars from us. They are available from Amazon for around £10 a set.
The Set of 3 First Emergency Vehicles by Orange Tree is a small trio of traditionally constructed wooden toys. I purchased this set in the run up to Christmas last year as a small stocking filler for my son.
I am particularly favourable towards traditional and basic toys. Unlike their electronic counterparts they do not 'put on a show', therefore encouraging imaginative and role play which are highly beneficial to intellectual development.
This trio of wooden vehicles were purchased from Amazon at just £6.99. For the purposes of this review I have browsed Amazon for an up to date price to find that they are now available at £6.98. I did however notice that the information given by Amazon regarding the manufacturer's age guidance is incorrect. This product is suitable for children of 12 months plus, not 36 months as stated by Amazon.
The first vehicle in this set is an ambulance. The design of this vehicle is rather contradictory to its traditional construction, looking rather modern in appearance. The main body of the vehicle is made from two pieces which are almost arch shaped yet flattened at the top and bottom. At the front is a small blue light, constructed again from wood as is the entire toy. All other details such as the red cross and detail to the front of the ambulance are painted on. The wheels stand apart from the rest of the toy as they remain a natural wood colour, just as with the other vehicles in this set.
The second in this trio stands apart from the rest and is my favourite of this particular set. It is a small red fire engine with a bright yellow ladder positioned upon a platform at the back of the vehicle. The ladder twists around just as it should do, in order to rescue people from burning buildings of course! Again there is a small blue light at the front of the vehicle made simply from a dowel of wood painted in a bright blue colour. Small details at the front of the fire engine are painted on.
The final vehicle in this set is a police car. Looking very much like the ambulance this vehicle is simply painted differently. The blue and white colours depict a police vehicle and the word 'Police' is across the side. As with the other two vehicles this one again has a blue light at the front and natural wood coloured wheel, reminding us that it is a wooden toy.
Each vehicle is varnished to create a very smooth finish with no sharp edges. This shiny surface also means that they are easily wiped clean with a damp cloth.
Though they may look almost 'rickety' these toys are very sturdy. That has certainly been proven by my son who is very partial to throwing his toys around.
What I love most about these toys is how innocent they are in terms of appearance. The painted details are not precise, in fact they look as though painted on by a child. The shape and form of these vehicles is modern yet very simple, again as though designed by a child. When pushed along the floor the dowel fixed wheels turn in an uneven and bumpy fashion and give the appearance that they are 'chugging along' in a cartoon like fashion.
The Orange Tree set of 3 First Emergency Vehicles is a simple little set of toys, yet a very appealing one and beneficial in terms if imaginative play. At just £6.98 they are also very reasonably priced!
Set of three brightly coloured first emergency vehicles. Perfect for little hands.
