Peppa Pig Vehicle with Figure Fire Engine
Advantages: My little girl likes it
Disadvantages: Doors fall off, Adult characters cannot be used
My little girl was a huge Peppa pig fan and along the way we picked up a number of toys relating to the character. One of the toys is this fire engine which we purchased from Asda when it was on sale for £3. Usual retail price is around £10 for the fire engine and you also get a fire fighter Peppa Pig figurine. We have a number of items from the range such as the school, and the firehouse so we thought this would be the perfect addition. It is in the lower price range of the Peppa pig toys on the market and this seems to really show with the quality of some of the pieces.
The fire engine is a good size and a similar size to other character vehicles you can buy such as Fireman Sam and Postman pat. Of course it is bright red in colour, and it has a hose sticker on the side. There are also stickers on the back of the fire engine with a range of fire fighters equipment on show. The doors open and close, and there are a pair of ladders on top that you can use to lift the figurine up to higher areas. There is nothing at all on the vehicle that shows it is a character branded toy, and other than the figurine there is nothing to say it is Peppa pig. Other than the movable ladder there are no interactive features, no noises just a simple fire truck.
On first impressions we were happy enough with the toy. I did worry he stickers may peel off, as we have had problems with this in the past with Peppa Pig toys. We have found they are still in one piece nearly two years later. They are a little scratched, but nowhere near as scruffy as I expected them to be by now. The fire engine is free rolling, so with a little push you can send it off across the room to put out a fire. The build of the toy itself was better than we expected, but the doors are very flimsy and broke off within a few weeks.
The ladders were also a great addition. You could lift them to the position you wanted them to be and lift the figurines up each step without them falling or moving. It was fairly flexible and my daughter loved making up stories with Peppa Pig saving the day. Sadly, about 6 months into use this broke off. My daughter is usually very caring with her toys, but I think it was just maybe used a little too much. She did use it daily at one point when she was in the middle of her Peppa pig phase, but once the ladder broke the amount of play declined very quickly.
The figurine is probably the best part of the set. You get a posable Peppa Pig figurine dressed up in a fire fighters outfit including a hat. Her hands and legs are movable and she is compatible with every Peppa pig toy we own. The figurines are tiny but they work perfectly with the small play sets. My little girl loves it and uses with all her other sets too. Peppa can be seated in the fire engine, but it is a squeeze getting her to sit correctly in the seat. My little girl rarely manages to sit her down without her falling out, but she just think this is part of the fun and plays let's keep Peppa in the fire engine.
My little girl was a little annoyed that none of the adults could sit in the driver's seat. In the series there is an episode that uses the fire station, and this fire engine. Mummy Pig and all of her friends are fire fighters, and Miss Rabbit drives the Fire engine. While you do not get Miss Rabbit with this set, my daughter has it from a helicopter we own, and she thought it would be great to recreate the episode. Unfortunately, as the adults are much larger it makes it impossible to fit them in the door let alone on the seat. My little girl just shoved Miss Rabbit in head first, and drove around with her legs hanging out of the door, but it was nowhere near as fun as it could have been if they were compatible.
As a standalone toy it works perfectly as it has the ladders for Peppa to climb and it can be pushed around. I do think it is a lot more fun when combined with other play sets, as it builds a bigger setting for bigger stories. This is mainly how my little girl plays with it, but now and again she will play with this on its own. The great thing is this is suitable for boys and girls. So many of the toys are marketed towards girls, so it is nice to have something that my little man who is also a huge Peppa fan can play with. My little girl doesn't love it, but it received a fair amount of use.
While the doors and ladders have broken off the fire engine is still usable. As they have come of the hinges so there are no sharp breaks, and my little girl still plays with it now and then. She likes she can get the characters in and out a lot easier, and it does not seem to bother her that the ladders are missing. She just improvises with a pair of Fireman Sam's ladders and she is good to go. Now she is getting a little older, she is not as keen on Peppa Pig, so this truck has been neglected lately.
The age recommendation is three years plus which is correct as in our experience the pieces break off. For anyone below this age it could potentially cause a choking hazard, and as most Peppa Pig fans are preschool children they would need constant supervision. Despite this toy receiving some play from my children, I do have to say I would not recommend it. There is nothing special about it that really makes it interesting, and without the figurine you would not even know it had anything to do with Peppa Pig. My daughter did really like it for a short period of time but she soon became bored with it. The doors and ladder have broken off and it just does not stand up to the quality needed to stand rougher play from preschool children. They are currently on sale on Amazon for £15 which I think is too high. At £3 it wasn't bad for a few months of use, but I wouldn't pay much more for it.
