“ Manufacturer: Plan Toys / Type: Construction „
This little construction set was a present my son won at a friend's son's birthday party in pass the parcel and I thought it was a great little set and he seems pleased with it too. However till writing this review I had no idea how much they cost and now I do I am uncertain if they represent value for money.
The set comprises of a digger, roller and a bulldozer. They are all made out of rubber wood which is nice and tough and seems to take the various knocks it gets very well. Despite their dinky size of around 5 cm by 5cm by 14 cm they are really robust and the roller and digger sections especially have impressed me as they seem to cope well with being pushed and moved around without any damage even after a years' worth of play. The wheel sections and tracks I am less impressed by as I frequently have to reattach the tracks to the digger and bulldozer as they seem to slip of really easily when being pushed around on the car play mat. Despite this on off occurrence with the tracks they haven't actually being damaged and still remain whole without any tears in them.
Play wise for my son he uses these on his car play mat to zoom around like most of his cars but he also uses them to knock over towers he builds from bricks and to push other cars around his little town. If I suggest it we also use some scrunched up paper for rocks to be moved around however the balls of paper often end up dwarfing the trucks so they don't always get moved. The small size of the trucks means that they fit nicely into children's hands and as they are smooth to the touch they feel great too.
Education wise the toy manufacture claims they are good for hand eye co-ordination and imaginative play. Whilst I can definitely see the benefit for my son with imaginative play as he learns about different trucks their uses and how these fit into the world he makes and builds. I do think hand eye co-ordination is limited to them moving the trucks around and manoeuvring the lifting devises. As it is still to fiddly for my son at 4 years old to put the track back on to the trucks.
These are designed for children 3 upwards and because of the way the tracks come of easily I would have to say this is right. However a younger child if supervised and watched would also enjoy these and I have seen them being played with at our local play group where children from 18 months old have being playing with them without any issue as they were supervised.
Overall these are a lovely set that my son loves to play with to help build and destroy his town. I think they are well made I just question if nearly £17 from Amazon is a realistic price and I personally thought they were about £10 for the set. I think they would make a lovely present for most young boy's four stars from me due to the price.
