Guess what? I was carrying this garage the short distance from my son's bedroom into my own to review it and it broke. It regularly breaks and I would like to start my review by saying don't waste your money buying this garage from Toys R Us.
I bought this item for my son's fifth birthday. I wanted a smallish garage, preferable wooden and this item seemed to fit the bill. It was on the Toys R Us website and is under their Universe of imagination brand. It was on a special offer for £19.99 instead of £29.99 and I thought this seemed like a good deal. I note that it is again on this offer on the website.
The garage is for age 3+ and a natural pine colour. It is very small but this is what I was looking for. The measurements are 45cm(w) by 35cm(h) and 32cm(d).
It comes in a flat pack box and when we opened it we found some instructions but I have to say these weren't great and we kind of stumbled along to build it as there weren't many pieces at all. There are probably around 10 or 12 pieces to the garage. Now these pieces fit in to the main base using dowels or in some of the cases metal pins slot into holes on to something else. When we made the garage we noticed immediately it just wasn't very secure or steady. Everything was in the right place but some of the levels were wobbly and the dowels seemed to fall out quite easily if my son used his cars on the ramps. Funny that....I thought you were supposed to use toy cars on a toy garage but maybe Toys R Us garages are made to just look pretty!
The garage took around twenty minutes to build altogether. This was with a little help from my mum! You are given instructions in the box, but these aren't the best to be honest and a little confusing at times.
It is quite a basic looking garage but it doesn't look bad as the wood is a nice natural colour and has a blue wooden trim. There are painted on car parking spaces for your child to put cars in but sadly my son doesn't really want to play with it much anymore and he was only five in May.
The best part of the garage is a winding pulley system where you can put a car on the ramp and then wind the pulley to lift them to the top of the garage. This part is quite solid and works well. My son plays with this part of the garage rather than the main structure.
Perhaps the garage would feel more secure if I glued all the parts together but we shouldn't really have to do this as I don't feel it was a particularly cheap set, even at the discounted price.
I would advise looking at different garages. Stay well clear of this one unless you want to be disappointed. My son hasn't complained about the garage being flimsy or anything but in fairness he just hasn't really bothered playing with it much at all.
This wooden garage comes with 3 floors, a ramp a working lift and even petrol pumps, also includes wooden cars and vehicles to move around the different levels. Fill up with fuel and off you go!
