My son has very recently acquired an interest in trains, notable Thomas the Tank Engine, so we used some of his birthday money to buy him some Thomas and friends Take and Play sets. He loved playing with these at his friend's house so we thought he would enjoy having some sets at home to play with. Alongside a couple of the sets, we bought this pack of track to join the sets together. It cost us around £11 from Amazon.
The take and play sets are ideal as they fold up neatly and can be taken with you on holiday or friends houses etc easily. However, when we are at home we like the track to be a little bigger which is why we opted for this track pack to connect them all up. The track is a grey plastic that is quite thick and sturdy. The track markings are on either side of the track so they can be used either way up. The tracks fit together like a jigsaw puzzle. This set contains 22 pieces of track. These are different shapes - curved or straight - and different lengths.
I do find that all items from the Thomas Take N Play range - trains and track sets alike - are very expensive for what they are. They are good quality though and my son absolutely loves playing with his set so I wouldn't hesitate to purchase more even at this price. This set is no exception though and, when you look at what you actually get for the money, it really isn't a lot. It does make my son's set more enjoyable though and we wouldn't be able to connect his sets without this. I do think that the set could do with a few less curved and a few more straight tracks but this is just personal opinion and probably down to the sets that we own. The track is easy to make up and you can make it different every time. The pieces slot together neatly so trains slide over them well and the markings mean that the trains stay on the tracks well too.
Overall a necessity for us for connecting my son's tracks up and great fun to push trains around on. Recommended by my son and I!
My son has many take and play sets and although they all do link up together to create a large track as each track is different this can mean it can be fiddly to put together and as most of the tracks are built in a round format it means little one can only send their train round and round in circles on most sets which can limit the play. I came across this take and play expander set and decided to purchase it for my son's birthday to accompany his new take and play sets and it has been a major hit.
For £12 I received 22 pieces of track they come in different shapes and sizes meaning little one can build the track as they wish. It comes in the same silver colour that features on most of the take an play sets meaning when the track is joined to the ready made sets it simply continues the track without looking any different. The size of this track however is a little different as they are slightly smaller than the track provided on the take and play sets although they are still easily linked up between sets you can tell where the new track starts and the play sets end although this just adds to my sons imagination and he uses this to make up stories about the rocky road ahead for Thomas.
The track has grooves in it meaning when the take and play trains are added to the track they are guided round the track by these markings although little one pushes take and play engines around the track unlike the track master versions it is great as if little one pushes the engine down a hill or round a bend the engine is still kept on the track and guided round without coming of the track.
As I have previously stated this track is intended for the expansion of any take and play sets you already own. However the track can be made up to form its own track without joining up to any play sets and this allows for take and play engines to be played on it. Although as the pieces are rather small and are intended to expand a track rather than make one this means it makes a very small circuit and as there are no forks in this set it does provide a very simple set.
The pieces click together very easily and both my 4 year old son and 2 year old son can make the track up themselves by putting a little pressure on the links at the end of the pieces of track they bond together easily providing a steady track to play on. My youngest son does need a little guidance but when it comes to actually putting the pieces together he can do this independently. They link up the take and play sets really well clicking easily in to place and creating a track between each play set which makes them a lot more fun for little one and it means my sons can create a huge Thomas land set with all their take and plays where as they seem to get bored putting the pre made sets together themselves so this really does add to the play experience.
We now have two sets of this expansion set as it makes the tracks even bigger and means all of my sons sets can be linked together it does over take the whole of my living room or the children's play room when all the pieces are used as it makes the sets huge but this just provides more room to play. This expansion set is great for more than one child playing as it provides a bigger play set meaning no arguments of who wants to play where. As there are different pieces that differ in shapes and sizes this means the track can be expanded however you like and although of course you are limited with what the track can build as there are four or five of each piece it still provides enough variation to build new layouts and therefore a new play experience for little one.
My only downside would be is the lack of accessories you receive 22 pieces of track but I would love a set that includes bridges, crossroads and signs like the track master range has available and my eldest son has asked a few times for some signs for his sets so I know he would enjoy this too. Although this is not too much of a problem it would be nice to have some more accessories available to make the tracks even more fun.
The set is very durable like the rest of the take and play sets the track is made out of plastic and it is nice and thick meaning it does not bend and snap even with two boys playing roughly with it. This also means they can be wiped down easily as my sons often try to cause accidents for their trains by tipping juice on their tracks which I found easy to clear up. The pieces connect easily to the take and play sets and also to each of the pieces in the expansion set and no matter how many times they are connected and pulled apart the ends of the track that clip together remain in one piece and fully functional even after nearly two years of use.
I would recommend this to anyone who has a Thomas fan and own any of the take and play range it can be used with as little as one take and play set and my sons actually use around 6 different sets at the same time by linking them all together which provides hours of fun and as the layout can be swapped and changed it never becomes boring. This is a fantastic set to add a little extra fun to a take and play set. These sets can be purchased at supermarkets and large toy stores as well as online at Amazon for between £12 and £15.
