Tomy Thomas & Friends TrackMaster Diesel 10 Engine
Advantages: Simple to use
Disadvantages: Claw could have been a little better
The track master range are the engines that have batteries and move along by themselves one you flip a switch you can also push them yourself as their wheels move fine but the main attraction is sitting back and watching your favourite engine chug along all by them self.
The engine is sturdy and well made it is made of plastic with free moving wheels it is a great size for little hands to hold while still being big enough to be worth the higher price tag that you pay. As diesel is a naughty engine my son likes to get him into all types of trouble which usually ends up with him being banged and bashed in some way but I can happily say that there are no signs of wear at all and he is still going strong.
Diesel 10 has a claw on the top of his head and this train is moulded in the same way there is a tiny claw that sits above diesel but it only opens and closes the smallest bit which my son was disappointed with he was hoping for a fully functional claw like his favourite character in the film but this was soon forgotten once he was playing.
The track master track has small markings in it that means when you push or witch the engine on it is guided around these lines so it will follow the track whichever way the track is set out. These engines move around the track rather slowly but my son still loves them and as he has began wanting to push the engines himself he loves that if he wants he can turn the engines off and push them himself.
The switch for turning diesel on is really easy to use you just push it one way for on and one way for off and children are easily able to do this themselves meaning they can play independently. The age recommendation is 3 years plus for track master toys and my son has been using them from around 18 months and has no problem with them they are a good size for smaller hands and as there are no small parts and always under adult supervision I was happy for him to have them a little earlier.
The engine is just like any other track master engines we have with the diesel 10 we received 1 troublesome truck with him which my sons loves as he likes to tell me the trucks are just as naughty as diesel. When you push a switch on the body of diesel 10 and away he goes he does seem to move a little faster than other track master engines we have but only by a little way and it certainly still moves at a fairly slow pace around the track.
The troublesome truck attaches to a small plastic hook at the back of the train and this is removable so it can be used with other track masters. This is very easy to do and as it has a flat panel my son likes to load things on to it for diesel to pull around so it adds another interactive feature to the train which my son and I think is great.
The batteries last really well we have had this engine for nearly a year now and we have not yet had to change the batteries although they are not provided when you purchase the engine so you do need to purchase them before you use the engine for the first time. What makes this engine a little different is he actually takes 1 C battery rather than an AA battery which was a little disappointing as all the other track master engine we own takes the same battery so of course my husband had to go out and purchase the correct batteries. Then you lift up the case of diesel 10 insert the battery and replace the case this is all really easy to do and takes a few minutes if you have the correct battery ready.
Like all track master engines although this is designed to work on track master track it can actually be used off the track on both wooden and carpeted flooring of course they just go in a straight line as there is no track to guide them but my sons love they can knock them off the track and continue playing.
My only downside is the case has becoming a little loose where we removed it to put the battery in place this does not make any difference in the use of the toy and does not provide any dangers for little one but seems as they are designed to be lifted off to replace the battery I would have hoped they clicked perfectly back in to place.
Overall I would recommend this toy to any Thomas fan children are drawn to him as he is the naughty character in the day of the diesels film and he has been a hit with both my sons. It would have been nice if his claw was movable to make him a little more true to his character but over all this does not stop my son from loving him anyway.
