“ Watch and clock set. „
My oldest son decided he wanted a watch so he could start telling the time. He is a massive Ben 10 fan and so after searching around a bit we decided on this Ben 10 watch and clock set - the clock is as you would expect with hands and numbers but with the watch being digital it meant he could experience both forms of time keeping - and the set was fairly cheap!
Design wise both appeal to a 4 year old boy (as he was at the time) although to adult eyes they are very bright, gaudy and cheap looking! The clock has all the main characters from the original Ben 10 series set in a fabulous green design with the watch being slightly plainer with the characters on the strap and on the actual face of the watch, but with the same appealing green colour.
As I say both appealed to my wee boy and to be fair met the requirements we had - introducing a young person to the concept of watches and clocks.
The watch is still going strong almost a year after we purchased it. It is a real pain to change when the clocks go back and forward as it is very fiddly but this does mean that the child can't adjust it by mistake. The design on the strap is starting to wear off in places but apart from that is still in fairly good condition and is now used by my 2 year old as an omnitrix substitute. It is also still keeping pretty good time.
The clock on the other hand is in the bin. I lost count of the amount of times the battery compartment feel open or the back came off. We resorted to superglue in the end! Finally it gave up the ghost and just stopped working (probably due to the ominous rattling sound!). In fairness my son did play with it and perhaps did drop it once or twice but it is meant to be for kids so you would hope it could take one or two knocks - the one we bought couldn't!
On balance it wasn't a dreadful purchase and I probably would have paid almost as much for the watch alone. In my opinion the clock let the set down but at the price we paid (not much more than 10 pounds) you don't expect things to last. Overall, not a bad wee set for kids to start learning to tell time, but perhaps best if you don't let them play with them!
My son had his bedroom designed in Ben 10 for Christmas. He is a big fan of the television series which is of the same name. Ben 10 is a boy called Ben tennison, who becomes a superhero in order to solve adventures and eliminate baddie monsters. I must admit, I haven't seen much of the television programme at all. But my son loves it and is caught up in the whole ben 10 hype that seems to be encapturing all the five year old boys in his class imagination.
When carrying out the interior design change to his bedroom, I was keen to incorporate a lot of ben 10 accesories. However, having raised a daughter who wanted a different bedroom every five minutes, I did not want to spend too much money. As I am well aware that todays craze and childs favourite will soon be tomorrows cast offs.
Whilst looking through the amazon web site, I came across a very charming wall clock and watch set. I was really pleased with this find as it seemed to fit all of my criteria. Firstly it was in exactly the right shade of green that would set of the darker lime green walls off nicely. I had seen a few varieties of ben 10 clocks, but none that appeared as bright and eyecatching as this one. Although the centre of the clock was round in shape, the outer circumfrance was all jagged in shape and made the clock look much more funky and modern looking.
I was also pleased that the clock had large numbers on the actual clock face. I thought that in time this would enable my son to read the time with confidence. However, after having the clock for some time, I have to say I often struggle to establish the time by reading this clock. I really have to go up close in order to see what the time is. This is because the numbers are coloured lime green, which is great, but the background on the clock is also lime green. Which means that the numbers get lost into the background.
So as far as telling the time goes, this clock leaves a lot to be desired. The hands are lime green the numbers are lime green and most of the background is lime green. Which is rather ridiculous when you stop and think of the designing process. However, this clock's saving grace is it's dedication to Ben 10. Apart from ben 10 himself who graces the centre of the clock. We have all the regular goodies and baddies displayed across the outer edging of the clock.
Although it is very difficult to see the time on this clock. What I have noticed, is that the clock does keep very good time. It is powered by an aa batery which slots into the back of the clock. This battery has lasted a good few months and is still going strong. I have noted that the clock itself is very accurate and never misses a minute.
As far as size is concerned, The clock could certainly do with being a lot larger. It has such a great contemporary design. But when up on the wall, I found that the clock fades into the background. It could certainly do with being of a much bigger size in order to work well within a ben 10 bedroom. The size of this clock was a huge disappointment to me. My son now has it as a bedside clock as it looked ridiculous up on the wall.
I was quite dismayed with the ben 10 watch that was included in this set. If Im brutally honest, I think it is cheap and nasty. The plastic watch is digital. But again, due to their being a ben 10 motif on the face, the actual digital display screen is far too small for a child to read. The strap on the watch, I found to be very flimsy and not at all durable. Which is stupid when you consider the age bracket of the potential wearers. The lime green plastic that holds the strap in place, fell off after only one days usage. I also had to adjust and put another hole in the strap in order for it to fit my sons little wrists.
I also found, that the lime green face of the watch, became very grubby, really quickly. I couldn't get it back to it's original colour even with vigorous scrubbing. I was dismayed with this, as little boys do get dirty. I think a lot more thought should have gone into the design of this watch.
In reflection, I do not feel that this clock and watch set is worth the money. I think that it is more suited to a pound store shelf. There is no doubt in my mind, that you are paying the majority of the money for the ben 10 brand. When in truth the materials used are cheap and tacky. I would be embarrased to give this to a child as a gift. I would not buy it for any of my son's friends. The clock is disappointing as it looks so much larger on the site, whereas in reality it is more of a bedside clock than wall clock.
In my opinion, I have seen much cheaper and more well made ben 10 sets in Argos and asda. I would certainly advise anyone to have a look around before buying this set. As there are much better sets on the market.
If you read a previous post on a Ben 10 action figure you will know my son is a big fan of this cartoon. I am not going to explain what Ben 10 is, simply because there is a long explanation on my other review so if you are a Ben 10 novice check it out.
My son recieved this clock and watch set for his 5th birthday. He is always asking what the time is and I thought using a digital display he could find out for himself.
******* The clock *****
The clock my son recieved is different to the one shown in the picture. I suggested this product with the projector alarm clock but have seen the one above so will try to describe both.
The picture shown is the Ben 10 wall clock. I looked at this item on amazon before heading to Agros for mine. I'm not sure how big this clock is as it is not stated on Amazon. But it is as you can see a green splat shape (everything Ben 10 has to be green) with pictures of the most common ailiens around the border. There is a circular clock in the middle with a picture of Ben 10 and the omnitrix. The clock obviously shows hours and minutes but also has a second hand. Like I say I didn't get this clock in the end so I apologise for lack of comment on it.
The projector clock is the clock I bought my son which also came with the watch shown above. The projector clock has a green base and a figure of Fourarms standing on top of it. There are only four buttons on this clock which make it simple for children to use : Project, Set, Adjust and Mode. It has a smallish digital display where you can see the time (hour, minutes and seconds) and day. It has an alarm although this is not the loudest, although it does the job as it wakes my son for school. It also has a stop watch feature.
The thing that makes this clock stand out is the projector function. There is a circular light on the top of the clock beside the Fourarms figure. When you press the projector button the time is projected onto the ceiling in green. This makes up for the small display. My son shows this function off to all who pass through the front door as a gimmik, yet it is also useful for him to see what time it is in the dark. It takes 2 AA batteries.
I took this out of my sons room to wirte about it. I have just accidently knocked it with my arm and one of the arms has just fallen off at the elbow joint. Better go and find some glue before he notices. Maybe not as strong as I thought.
The watch face itself is mainly blackand has pictures of ailiens on it. Surrounded by green border where there is a button (metal pin) to allow to switch between time, date and stopwatch displays. There is also what i would call an inverted button which u push with the aid of a pen or pin to adjust the date and time. The watch strap is black with pictures of the most common ailiens as you would expect. I had to make an extra hole in the strap for my son but he is tiny. My son wears this watch with pride and has developed a much greater understanding of time. It is a 12 hour display which is perfect for younger children.
The wall clock and watch set are currently selling for £10 on Amazon while the projector clock and watch set are £19.58 in argos. I bought mine in argos for £15.99. I know the Projector clock without the watch is also being sold in some Asda stores for £16.99.
My son loves this and is now happy to go and look at the time instead of asking.
