My son loves Doctor Who and for Christmas last year he ended up getting quite a few Doctor Who toys. One of the items which I bought for him was the nano voice recorder and it was purely a last minute impulse buy really as I had some cash back to use in my Littlewoods catalogue and decided to use it to treat him to an extra present. This review will discuss our experience of the nano voice recorder.
==What is it?==
In the episode where the Doctor and Amy first come across the silence they end up having to use the nano voice recorder to record when they see the silence because as soon as they turn away they forget they have seen them at all. The nano recorder toy is basically a replica of the one used in the episode.
I have to say when my son first got the nano recorder out of the box on Christmas day I just looked at it and thought did I really pay £14.99 for something which looks so small and basic. My first reaction was soon changed though upon closer inspection of the toy.
The nano recorder is made from plastic but it is actually really sturdy. I think sometimes, especially with guns, they can feel quite flimsy and like they would break should you dare to touch any of the movable parts but this is not the case with this at all. The nano recorder features two parts which you can move and these obviously include the trigger on the gun as well as an end part which you can pull out and which will flash red until you pull the trigger. My son has played with this toy so much since Christmas and his friends have to but I am not worried that it may break whilst in play as it just feels excellent quality yet light weight too.
Whilst this toy does feature light and sound effects when the end of the recorder is pulled out and then subsequently the trigger is pulled to release it the main feature of this toy and one which my son has so much fun with is the ability to record your own message on to the nano recorder much like the characters in the show do. Initially we did struggle to suss out how you actually do record a message because we didn't bother reading the instructions thinking it would be a simple task!
To record a message you need to hold down the button which is on the left of the nano recorder near the trigger and then release it when you have finished recording your message. You are able to record a ten second message which I think is actually quite a fair time considering the size and cost of the product. My son was quite sneaky with this product at first and would hover around recording what you say but we soon wised up to it as the recorder beeps twice when you finish recording and it is quite loud! I have to say I have also been known to have a little play with this toy and will sometimes leave an "I love you" or some silly message on it so that when my son plays with it next he will get a surprise! When my son's friend came to play one day she was totally taken by this toy and found it hilarious that they could record messages on there and play them back!
To listen to your message back you can either push the record button once or you can fire the trigger on the gun twice. As the message is replayed a red light flashes through the front of the recorder which my son loves when it is dark and he is playing with the toy. What I find incredible with this toy is the sound quality because to be honest I was expecting it to be a bit quiet, possibly scratchy and probably not really worth listening to but I was so wrong! The sound quality I think is excellent and certainly not quiet or inaudible and so I think the makers, Character, have got it really right with this one.
The nano recorder needs 2 AAA batteries which aren't provided but the ones we put in on Christmas day are still going strong now.
This is a toy my son plays with regularly and more so when he has some friends round. He doesn't play with it for hours at a time and is more likely to spend a little while recording messages and playing them back but ultimately this is what this toy is about. It isn't meant to be educational it is just meant to be fun and I think it is so important that children have those kinds of toys as well as the ones in which they can learn something and so this toy certainly comes with our recommendation.
==Price and availability==
As I said I paid £14.99 for this toy before Christmas and it is still selling at that price at toys r us and some other retailers but amazon have it for just £5.87 which includes free super saver delivery and I would say snap it up at this price.
Thank you for reading my review!
