I was given one of these hamsters in a wheel a few years ago as a gift by a friend as I was living somewhere where I wasn't able to have any pets. I thought that it was great and I was really pleased to receive it! The hamster itself is quite cute and is slightly smaller than a real Syrian Hamster. Mine is furry and light brown and white in colour but I have seen some for sale that include completely white hamsters. It has little wheels underneath and when you flick the switch on the underside of hammy, he will start 'running' in the wheel. The one in the picture has a pink wheel however the version I have is in a blue wheel so this is not an item that is exclusively for girls.
The hamster is not able to fall out of the wheel when it is running due to the bars which keep it contained. However you are able to take the hamster out if need be which makes it a bit less fiddly to turn on and off and of course allows you to change the battery if necessary. The base of the wheel keeps the whole thing very stable and it does not ever wobble or tip up. It also doesn't matter which way the hamster is facing when you put it in the wheel as it is more than happy to run in either direction!
I really like the fact that the wheels on the underside of the hamster are deliberately a bit uneven. This means that it wobbles from side to side a bit when running in the wheel which looks much more realistic than if it were to be permanently attached to the wheel or guided along by a rail in the centre of the wheel.
I think children would find it quite fun to play with although they may get bored with it after a while. You can also get hold of similar toys where the hamster is in a ball which may be more interesting for children as this could be placed on the floor and might be a bit less predictable in terms of which direction it takes. This wheel runner hamster is suited well as a novelty item for older children and students for example as it doesn't take up much space and it can be left running happily by itself on a shelf without having to be redirected due to different pieces of furniture getting in the way.
Even though I have had mine for a while, I do still turn it on from time to time and watch it go around for a bit as it is quite a fun little novelty. However, on those occasions I generally only ever leave it on for 10 minutes or so as it is reasonably noisy. The plastic wheels on the rungs of the wheel make quite a bit of noise when it is in operation and I imagine this could quite easily become irritating if someone else is operating it an you are not the person controlling the on / off switch! Although, even when it is not in use I think it looks quite good on the shelf.
There is no assembly required however you do need to put 2 x AAA batteries into the hamster as they are not supplied. As mine was a gift, I am not sure where it came from but a quick check has told me that these are currently available on Amazon for £5.99 with free delivery and also second hand for various similar prices on ebay.
So all in all this is a fun, simple toy which would make a nice little stocking filler this Christmas!
