Advantages: Loud! - looks great - no issues so far - fun for little girls - cheap for what it is
Disadvantages: Can be loud / annoying - not wireless as I had hoped
For Christmas 2012 like I do every year, I stalk Amazon for stocking fillers for my daughter for bits and bobs to go with her main presents. I came across this Bedroom Doorbell which I thought would be a great gift as she is forever having friends in and out of our house and would be fun for them all to use before entering her bedroom. However, with only one review commenting on how loud this is, I really didn't know what to expect in terms of quality due to its low price... but it looked a great novelty which I was sure my daughter would love and luckily for us the pink and purple shown on the online photo are the same colours as her bedroom.
The toy was delivered very quickly by a private seller on Amazon and arrived in the post well protected with no damage. The doorbell is protected by the same plastic covering on the picture and has 2 AA batteries included to use in this. I made the choice not to open this up to check if it was working and waited for my daughter opening this on Christmas morning - thankfully there was no issues and worked perfectly.
As previously mentioned there was very little information on the product information on Amazon and with only 1 customer review with again very little information I had no idea on what to expect with this. I did hope from looking at the picture the doorbell button was wireless to the speaker as this is what it seems to show in the picture. In actual fact the two are connected by a 1M white wire which was a bit of a let down in my opinion as I wanted to install the button outside her room and the speaker inside - due to the shortness of the wire and the fact it had a wire in the first place this was now impossible to do without overlapping the doorframe and causing issues opening the door itself. Due to this let down I had the doorbell installed on my daughters bedroom door itself with the button at the bottom for her to reach and connected to the speaker further up the door. You can easily hook up both to a wall or a door using hooks as there is an opening in the back of both parts to be held up this way.
In terms of appearance, as previously mentioned are primary pink and purple. When you look close up the plastic casings which protect the insides are actually transparant and you can see the wires inside. Some items the transparentness would look very cheap and nasty but in my opinion works well on this doorbell. The main part of the toy - the speaker - is shaped like a flower which is perfect for any little girl.
Both parts of the doorbell are made out of plastic and although not the thickest plastic in the world looks durable as long as its hung up and placed correctly as I suspect if someone was to stand on this / it drops off a bedroom door or wall it will be very easily broken. The doorbell button is quite firm to push and not flimsy like I expected it to be and to date we have had no issues of connectivity problems between the button section and the speaker... as the other review said on Amazon - this is a very loud door bell... which is either a good or bad thing depending on the person who has to listen to it... If like me, you have an overexcited child who continuously presses the button it can be very annoying! The sound which comes from it is a very high pitched "Ding Dong!" and with one press of a button it repeats this noise twice before stopping. The review on Amazon noted that due to the loudness of the device they had moved it outside to a garden playhouse so you can also use it for this purpose... however I can't comment on how it holds up in wet conditions as ours is indoor.
Terms of durability we have had this on her bedroom door over a month and its very much still alive and had no battery changes to date which is surprising as you are only sent cheap batteries with the purchase which you don't expect to last long and also when I take into account how often my daughter and her friends use this and how much I have been driven crackers by the noise!
The only thing that has really let this toy down for me is the fact that its wired and not wireless but due to the low price I think I was expecting too much and its really not that much of an issue! In all I would recommend this toy - if you feel you can cope with the noise!!
I havent seen this in any shops but you can buy this on Amazon for just £10 with free delivery.
