While browsing in my local Pastimes shop I came across this lovely talking Bagpuss. Now you will have to be of a certain age to remember "Bagpuss" as this was a childrens programme way back in the early seventies ( 1974 to be exact!). Only 13 episodes were actually made, which I was quite surprised about as it was such a popular show and has a big following.
Set in a shop, with a little girl called Emily who owns Bagpuss. This pink and cream cat would wake up when Emily left the shop as would all the other toys. This lovely fluffy, soft, pink and cream cat bought back old memories of watching this series when it was repeated in later years with my children.
Now who to buy it for was the problem as I wanted to give it to my grandson, but as he is under a year old and the tag does say over 3 years. So not suitable for him, I suppose this is because of the fluff, maybe coming off in tiny hands. I did try and gave it a good few tugs, but nothing came off which I thought was quite good. The sign of a good quality toy.
Finally deciding to buy it for my Daughter in law ( so my grandson will still get to look at it!) who is Bagpuss mad and already has the little mouse. This toy is 38cm long from head to tail and on pushing a certain spot on his mouth he will recite the words;
"Bagpuss Dear Bagpuss
Old Fat Flurry Catpuss
Wake Up And Look At This Thing That I Bring
Wake Up, Be Bright, Be Golden And Light
Bagpuss, Oh Hear What I Sing"
finishing off with a magical tinkling sound.
The voice that speaks these words, sounds exactly the same as the man that was in the programme. I really don't know if it is him or not!.
This really is a lovely keepsake rather that a toy I would say, It is quite expensive at £25.00, but I did get it half price for £12.50 so not to bad.
The only downside is that you can't replace these batteries and once they die, that's the end of talking Bagpuss which is a shame as this is the magical touch to this toy. Although I do believe that it does have quite a long life and can be pressed many times.
I'll give 4 Dooyoo stars for this toy as I've dropped 1 star because of the batteries not being able to be replaced.
