Like most children my son made a christmas list, on his list was a Vtech Kidizoom camera that he had seen on tv but after reading reviews and talking to the photography guide here on Dooyoo I decided that it would be a waste of money.
I wanted to get my son a normal digital camera but my husband insisted that we went for the Vtech Kidizoom Pro as he was worried that our son would break a normal camera.
-What do you get in the box?-
PC installation CD
The camera is black and grey, it is quite a big chunky camera with each side having rubber handles which are ideal for younger children.
On the back of the camera you will find lots of different buttons such as cursor buttons, On/off button, Ok button and activity selector.
There is a 1.8" display screen which my son tends to use more than the double view finder and I have to say he seems to take better pictures when he uses the display screen.
To take a photo all you have to do is select the camera picture on the selector and when you are ready you press the shutter button which is located on top of the right hand handle.
You can set the settings for photos:-
1600 x 1200 or
640 x 480
It says in the manual that the focus range without flash is 1.5 feet and with flash 3 - 6 feet.
The camera can also take a video which is 320 x 240
The camera has 256MB of built in memory which can store around 500 photos or a very short video.
There is a slot on the camera for a SD or SDHC card so you can upgrade to a maximum of 16GB.
To record a video you just turn the dial to the video icon, press the shutter button to record and press again to stop.
The cool thing about this camera is you can play Mp3s on it, there is a volume control on the camera and I have to say we have enjoyed listening to some of my sons songs.
There are 5 games on the camera, you use the cursor keys to play the games which are aimed at a child 5+. My son is way too young really to play the games but he still has a lot of fun trying them out.
We put duracell batteries in the camera on Christmas Eve and they are only now starting to get very low which is I think is really good because the camera gets used a lot especially for music.
-Can my son use the camera?-
My son is 3 and half years old and I have to say he is really getting the hang of using the camera. On christmas day he took over 200 pictures most of which were blurry but now he can take some decent photos and our heads are actually in the pictures instead of our legs and feet!
He can easily find his mp3`s and can take a video though he does not really understand that he is making a video.
One thing I like about the camera is that if my son leaves it on in camera mode and goes off to do something else it will turn itself off.
-What Do I think?-
This camera costs £75 and I really did not think it was going to be worth the money but I have to say I am really impressed with it. Okay you are not going to get fantastic photos that we would get on our camera but the point is my son is able to take his camera out with him, he can take photos without me being worried about him breaking the camera and he keeps himself amused in the car with music or he plays games.
We have found transferring photos from the camera to the computer very easy to do using the lead provided though my husband can take out the SD card and put it straight into his computer as it has an SD slot.
The photos can be quite clear and are a much better quality than a web camera or phone camera. If my son does not take his time then yes the photos can be blurry but he is learning to take his time.
One thing I really hate about the camera is the flash as it is so bright and can really blind you!
Also be warned if you decide to take the camera outdoors take a screwdriver with you because you will need it should you need to change the batteries!
At the moment I cannot tell you if the camera is indestructible as my son has been very careful not to throw it across the room, in fact he is looking after the camera very well!
The only thing my son has not been allowed to try out are the headphones as I feel he is too young to be using them.
