Advantages: None really
Disadvantages: Expensive, bad instructors
When I decided it was time to learn how to drive, I chose the AA because I had a voucher for a free lesson and I thought they were a reputable company, but little did I know what I had let myself in for. My instuctor nearly always turned up late and wasted my time. He was very impatient and did my confidence no good. AA's strategy is to make you take as many lessons as possible so they can leach you dry of money before your test. Another annoying thing is that they change your car every few months so you have to get used to a new clutch, and this adds yet more lessons to your bill. I found it to be a very impersonal service and as a result I failed my test with them. Thinking that it was just my bad driving to blame, I left the AA Driving 'school' and started lessons with an independent instructor. He told me my driving was fine and after a few lessons I easily passed my test. I don't know if this was just a one off, but my advice to any learner drivers is to boycott large, money making driving schools such as the AA and BSM and learn with independent driving schools who are far more successful.

- 29/04/01 Yep - lots of dishonest schools out there, making you feel bad so they can get more lessons out of you. |

- 29/04/01 I so totally agree! My wife was with the AA for over a year and failed her test four times. She too found the policy of changing cars really annoying. She has now changed to an independant and is much happier and is driving much better! |

- 29/04/01 I passed with an independent instructor. I think that word-of-mouth is the best guarantee of getting a good instructor, but not a perfect guarantee. |
