Advantages: You form a bond
Disadvantages: You get an idiot
I passed my driving test years quite a while a go now but my driving instructor had a big impact on me. He was a kind and gentle guy who seem to have endless amounts of patience. When I got in a 'huff' because I couldn't do it or when I turned right instead of left and took the long way home, he would quietly sit and reassure me that it didn't matter and I was doing fine. To me he was meant for the job and was everything a driving instructor should be but I've had a lot of friends who have had awful experiences.
Some people just aren't cut out to do the job of a driving instructor and it's important that you feel comfortable in what could potentially be a dangerous situation. If your driving instructor is rude or aggressive then this could make you feel upset and uncomfortable which will probably result in you taking longer to get to the point of taking your test or not being able to concentrate fully and ending up doing something silly. Here are some pointers on how to find the perfect instructor:
1) Get a recommendation off a friend.
2) If you are nervous with male instructors then there are female ones out there so go for them instead.
3) Don't be afraid to 'dump' your instructor. If you aren't getting on with him or her then find someone else. The bigger companies will have a whole array of people working for them so just move to someone else.
4) If you go with a big company then state exactly what you think you would want in an instructor. Don't be afraid to do this after all you are the one that is paying for a service.
5) Finally, if something is said that is inappropriate then report them. I had a friend who's instructor sounded like a real pervert and was always commenting on her breasts. When she finally did pluck up the courage to leave him, she didn't report him so he probably carried on doing the same to others.
Hopefully this is a bit helpful to some of you and good luck!
Summary: Be careful how you choose

- 28/06/09 I had a lovely, patient instructor - which is just as well, given how long it took me to pass my test! |
