Advantages: A good instructor will help you develop good habits.

Disadvantages: Some instructors are not very thorough.

Some instructors are absoloutely bloomin brilliant and some are totally rubbish. I often feel sorry for the learners I see at my local stadium sometimes, as this is a hot spot for instructors wishing to practise "Bay Parking" with their students. You often see grumpy old male instructors wasting time having a cigarette whilst their pupil waits at the wheel, and many instructors waste time by pulling their pupils over for ages or stopping to fill up the tank with petrol - apparently something that is against the ADI code.

When learning to drive, the secret is to pick a good instructor, which doesn't always mean the absoloute cheapest. In the driving-lesson market, you will have a wide range of pricing schemes, with the most expensive lessons often being those provided by one of the big commercial driving companies. What you really want is a nice local instructor, who is reasonable but not dirt cheap, that you ideally know others have been satisfied with.

The difference between a good instructor and a bad one is easy to see. A good one is very maticulous about every small detail, teaches the manouvers in a very easy to understand way and eventually aims to get you to pass your test with no faults. A bad one often fails in all of these areas.

Good luck! Hopefully you'll be tearing up those L plates soon enough!

Summary: Cheapest is often not the best.

I had a BRILLIANT driving instructor, his name was Stan and he owns Roadcraft driving school in Isleworth. I used to cry every time I sat behind the wheel, I was terrified. Now I have my licence - and I passed first time! He is a miracle worker. He explains everything really well, is super calm, very reliable......if he can get me driving, he can get anyone driving.
