Advantages: Passing your test with an instrctor that cares.

Disadvantages: Some aren't cut out to teach.

Learning to drive is such a daunting experience so it's extra important to find the right instructor for your personality. I'm a pretty calm person most of the time but put me behind a wheel of a car and I become highly strung and downright abusive so I needed someone who was calm and didn't say alot during my lessons. Fortunately my friend had a great instructor so she hooked me up with him. He really was excellant at making me feel like I was doing a good job and didn't panic when I put us in a potentially dangerous situation (which was quite a lot at first!). He would never get mad when I forgot my left from my right and took us the long way home even though we only had five minutes of the lesson left and he was genuinely happy for me when I passed my test (probbly happy to get rid of me more than anything!!!).

I was one of the lucky ones who's lessons went well and my instructor was actually really good. I had a friend who's instructor was short tempered with her and would often make in appropriate remarks about her breasts! For some reason she felt obligated to continue paying him £20 an hour to be nasty to her. Eventually she realised that there was better out there and went with someone else.

There are so many schools and independant instructors to choose from that it can be completely overwhelming. Most of them charge so much per hour that it's really important to pick someone that you not only gel with but that you also feel comfortable with because you can spend quite a lot of hours in that car with that person. Here are a few tips on getting it right the first time.

1) Check that they are registered and own all of the relevant qualifications needed to be an instructor.

2) If you can try to find one that has been recommended by a friend.

3) If you think you would be better with an instructor of the same sex then specify that on the phone. They won't think bad of you.

4) If you would prefer that no one else is in the car with you for the whole hour of your lesson then specify that too. Some places will cater for that need.

5) And finally when you've chosen one don't feel that you need to stick to that person. If you don't get a long with their style of teaching then find someone else. You don't want to put yourself under anymore stress than you need to.

There are so many driving schools out there that will cater for most individual needs so start looking and don't be afraid to ask lots of questions. At the end of the day you are the one handing over the money so you can call the shots to a certain degree.

Summary: Be careful about who you choose.

Some good advice here. I hated my first driving instructor and actually gave up for a year or two. The next one suited me better but he wasn't the most professional. He did get me through my test however.
