Advantages: Friendly, efficient and helpful

Disadvantages: Smaller business with higher overheads so maybe a little more expensive than other garages

As your stereotypically clichéd female I have absolutely no knowledge whatsoever about cars (apologies to any car savvy ladies out there). I'm fine with locating the indicators or hazard lights, and I know which pedals are which, but ask me to change a tire or a spark plug or locate the gear box - pigs will be most definitely flying first!

This is what garages are for.

Now, the worst thing in the world when handing over vast amounts of money is to not know a thing about what you're paying for. When my car first needed maintenance in the form of a service I was charge over £600 from the first garage I had tried (for what seemed like minimal work).

Scanning through their itemised bill it wasn't the parts that were costly but the labour - I was being charged 3 or 4 hours for certain tasks which I couldn't really believe would take all that long (of course with no knowledge to base this accusation on I could be very wrong) so I did feel a bit as though they'd seen me coming. Since they were local I tried them again for my MOT and even though I had recently had my service done there was yet again a huge amount of work supposedly required for it to pass which worked out very costly again.

I decided to look around for my next service and stumbled across a small family run garage - Great Hollands Bracknell MOT & Service Centre - at only a 5 minute walk from my house - so far so good. The mechanics (masquerading as reception staff) were very friendly and welcoming and I immediately felt much more comfortable then at my previous garage.

I was able to leave my car with them and toddle off home while they worked and they rang up only an hour later with a full quote and to check I was happy with the work they were intending to do which was already way cheaper than my previous garage despite them being a smaller business with higher overheads...interesting...

When I came to pick up my car they took some time to fully explain everything they had done and the prices rather than just charging extortion and not telling me why which made me feel much happier about the big wad of cash I was handing over.

I then tried them again for my next MOT which again worked out much cheaper than the previous garage I had tried. There were a few advisory notes after my MOT and rather than suggesting they fix the problems themselves they pointed out that larger garages could fix them for a much cheaper cost which I felt was amazingly honest and my estimation of them rose even further.

So in conclusion, Great Hollands Bracknell MOT & Service Centre is a very welcoming and honest family run business which perform their work to a very quick and high standard - if you live in the neighbourhood I would definitely recommend you give them a try for all your motoring maintenance needs.
