Disadvantages: Get it cheaper through Direct Line!

I subscribe to Green Flag through Direct Line.

After many years with RAC, I decided to give Direct Line a go, on the recommendation of others. Direct Line actually provide the service through Green Flag, who in turn don't actually have many of their own patrols, but instead subcontract out to local authorised garages who work on behalf of Green Flag.

First, the price. Green Flag were a full £40 cheaper for a years cover for both mine and my partners car, for the same level of service that RAC/AA offer. Not only that, but becuase I bought through Direct Line, who I have my motor insurance with, I got a discount on the Green Flag rates. Which means that it actually saved me over £50 - which is fine, providing the service is up to much.

And it is - exceptionally so.

With RAC, you could expect to wait 90+ mins if your car didn't start in the morning. With Green Flag, that was 20 mins.

With RAC, I once waited over an hour for a flat battery in a supermarket carpark. Green Flag were with me in 15 mins for the same problem.

I've been with them for 3 years now, and I don't think I have waited more than 30 mins for any call out, and there have been a few! As the staff that turn up are local garages, you can be assured that they're trained mechanics, and as such, if they can fix the problem, they will - and in every case I have had, without any charge either. If they can't fix it, they will tell you exactly what the problem is, and are not offended if you wish to get the job done elsewhere.

Also, when you call them out, they send a propper vehicle for the occasion. If you complain of a split water hose, a small van comes out to look at the problem, and effect a repair. If you complain of a blown head gasket, they despatch a low-loader first time. With RAC, they will always send you a transit van, even if you know damn well that there is nothing the transit patrol can do to fix your problem
(eg siezed gearbox, blown engine etc), and then you have to wait another hour while they then send a low loader to recover your vehicle!

All in all, Green Flag gets a stupendous thumbs up - they are very efficient, excellent value for money, and basically offer the best breakdown service bar none!
