Advantages: efficency, fuel costs
Disadvantages: price, weight
For between 2 and 10 million pounds you can save the world. Well, at least you can think you will. Step Forward Honda, who for along time have been talking about their new hydrogen powered car, and finally it seems to have arrived.
The Honda FCX Clarity is one in a generation of cars the Japanese company is sending out to stop the world from heating up. The car is 3 times more efficient than petrol vehicles, and twice as efficient as hybrids. Its hand built V flow hydrogen fuel cell powers lithium-ion batteries within the car. These in turn, create 134 bhp, taking the car from a slow 0-60 in...10 seconds, with a top speed of 100mph. Petrol heads out there could be put off by this, but the more global aware of you should realize that the only bi-product of this car is water. Also, hydrogen is the most plentiful substance in the universe- Unlucky for Shell.
On the downside for everyone except the Billionaire of you out there, is cost. The fuel cell alone will cost more than a penthouse apartment in London. And the full car will add up into 8 figures. Think 10 and add 6 zeros to the end of it. This price is only because there are 2 of them at this moment in the entire world. Prices should fall with time though. Give Honda another 10 or 20 years and you could be looking at a hydrogen powered car section on here. It's a bold idea, but everything has to start somewhere.

- 07/02/08 I don't think that I'll be test driving this anytime soon....I suspect that the new Accord is going to look rather "old-tech" by comparison - although over the last 87500 miles and four years I have been mighty impressed with my diesel Honda Accord - although it's nowhere near as economical as Honda claim in the real world.
If anyone can make hydrogen fuel cells work on a production basis Honda can. Thanks for an informative, and well informed, if rather brief, review.
