Advantages: None
Disadvantages: Expensive, Rip-off, Cowboys
Be cautious with independant garages. I recently took my car to a garage I had had previous experiences with and thought were reliable..... Goldhawk Road Services in Shepherds Bush, London I took it for an MOT which it failed. No problems I thought when they told me what was wrong..not such big items... But then they told me the quote...£400! Needless to say I paid what I owed them for the MOT (and some extra that they promised they would not charge me for looking at the car to see what was wrong with it but insisted on anyway) and took the car away. being quite handy with a socket set I headed off to the local to local parts shop and got all the parts "they" said I needed. It totalled £55 and "they" were going to charge me over £200 for them. I changed a couple of things but not all of the stuff they said needed changing (It was raining and I didn't have time) and took it to another MOT centre. Needless to say the car passed with no problems and the mechanic said the car seemed fine all round with nothing I needed to watch out for. The total cost of this was £14 for the parts I used... and £30 for the MOT. A considerable saving from the £400 that Goldhawk road services quoted. The moral of this story is... Be careful with garages as sometimes they will just try and rip you off. Lucikly I worked out what they were up to and they have now lost my custom forever...

- 08/11/02 Great first review, read (and take note) of the comments below and you should be fine.
Read and rate lots of opinions around the site and maybe leave the odd comment or two so people know you've read their ops. You'll develop a writing style this way and you'll probably get a greater number of reads too.
If you need any help around the site, then please let me know.

- 04/11/02 Goode firtst review. But what's the alternative? Main dealers are even bigger rip-off merchants.
When I take any of our family's cars for an MOT, I go to our local 'Motor Engineers', who now know that I will generally carry out the work myself (now including welding). They are now very fair, and even advise on what might require attention for the following MOT.
Three years' ago, they charged £250 for welding the underside of a Nova. Now, our sone and myself can do that ourselves at about £25 for materials, plus about 3 - 4 hours work. |

- 04/11/02 Welcome!
Good 1st op and one garage that I'll be staying away from. Not that I've much opportunity to go anyway seeing as I live in Camden and don't own a car.
