On the 26th of october this year i took my Renault clio to the Harrogate road branch of kwik fit to report that the steering seemed a bit erratic and felt like it was trying to steer in a different direction to what i wanted to go in. As i am an ex mechanic myself i knew that it was something to do with the tracking or steering rack itself and as i don't have a ramp at home like most people i kwik fit seemed the easy option.
I spoke to the manager,steve, and explained what was the problem and he said that it would take about 45 minutes to track it up and i would be on my way and sure enough about an hour later the car was ready to drive away.
I had driven about 2 miles when i noticed that the steering was still the same and that the car now veered to the left alot and when i braked it seemed to wobble all over the place and was still not right but by the time i got home kwik fit was shut and i was on early shift the next day.
I decided to take the car to a friend of mine who has been in the motor trade as a mechanic for over 30 years and let him check it for me. He took about 2 minutes to find out what the problem was, it was the offside track rod end which was shot to pieces and he told me what i already knew that you cannot track a cars front wheels with a faulty track rod end and that it was an easy fault to spot as you have to adjust the track rod end to track a cars front wheels up anyway!!
I took the car back to kwik fit and spoke to steve the manager and told him what the problem was and he said he remembered my car but he had checked the track rod end and it was fine!! i told him i didn't believe him to which he replied " thats your problem" and started to walk off, i then asked him why he hadn't spotted such an easy fault and then gone and charged me nearly £30 for the car to be tracked up and left the garage in a worse state than it was before. He continued to look at me as if i was a clown and i demanded his bosses name and number to which he just pointed at the wall and said "thats him there if you have a problem, ring him"
I rang the area managers number and i told him what had happened and he then proceeded to patronise me as if i knew nothing about cars at all even after i had told him i was in the motor trade for 15 years on and off and that his description of a track rod end and how it worked was totally unnecessary! He then said he would ring steve and speak to him about it and ring me back. After more agueing i decided to get a track rod end and fit it myself only to discover that the locking nut on the track rod end was seized up!! so how did the guy who tracked my car up adjust it even though he said it was 5 millimeters out on each wheel without undoing the locking nut?!
I will not be using them again so be aware motorists! they are not mechanics, they are just fitters!
