I will start by stating I am a qualified tyre fitter of 15 years experience who is currently in the trade. I visited a Kwik Fit centre in Birmingham to acquire a tyre for a friend i was visiting in Birmingham and as I live and work in Nuneaton was not able to supply and fit the tyre myself.

I enquired about a tyre, which was a 185/65R15 H rated tyre....the important part for this review is the H which is a tyre's speed rating and gives the maximum speed the tyre is designed to safely be able to travel at. A H rating is approximately 130mph.

On enquiring the 'supervisor' informed me they had none in stock but offered a 185/65R15 T rated tyre instead. A T rating is only approximately 118mph and thus would be a step down and replacing a H rated tyre with a T rated would in the least invalidate the insurance of the car, on mentioning this fact the 'supervisor' replied in a mildly patronising manner that T was greater than H, at which point I turned around and walked out...

From someone in the trade I would recommend anyone looking for tyre related help to stay far away from Kwik Fit as the advice I received was incorrect, potentially dangerous as not only does the speed rating relate to the maximum speed (which no one should even be approaching) but also has relation to the performance the tyre is designed for and thus can effect braking and cornering performance, also as I mentioned having inappropriate tyre fitment would also invalidate your car insurance and is also illegal.
