      Do NOT use this place for an MOT

      Brilliant I thought, I'll save a bit of money taking the car for its MOT with a discount from the AA so only costing £26 !!!!!
      Went up to the National Tyre & Autocare in Lintonville Terrace, Ashington where they failed the car saying there was a loose light whose beam image was incorrect, how had I not noticed this when driving in the dark!!?? They could fix this for £16. They said that the nearside front tyre was worn close to the legal limit but they could fix this if I bought a new tyre off them for £50!!!!
      The car was serviced on Monday and the mechanic said I had another 2000 miles left before I had to think about replacing the tyres.
      I went straight back to my usual garage and the mechanic said that the light was loose but I would have noticed this and I hadn't, he fixed it for free and he checked the tyres and said that the tread was well within the legal limits!!!!!
      So bear in mind yet AGAIN!!!! There is NO such thing as a ''free'' (£26) lunch!!!!
      I will just have to pay another £50 for an MOT at a reputable garage!!!!

      Avoid this company. Ordered online a set of 4 winter tires for both of my vehicles. Over 1400 pounds which was a competitive price, advertised 2-3 days delivery. After taking my money and directing me elsewhere via an email link to book a collection / fitment date, they proceeded to advise best date for fitment would be some 16 days later. I accepted this (shouldn't have done) and booked the fitment date.
      Couple of days before the fitment date I receive an email requesting me to contact them, when I call them I am advised the tires are not in stock and it will be a further 10 working days before they have them.
      Worth noting that the same tires remained advertised with a 2-3 days availability throughout this period.
      Refuse to accept this diabolical performance and insincere apology for delay, requested money is returned immediately. Not got it back yet. Wish I could put zero stars... Seriously - go elsewhere!

      Had to adjust the headlamp and ended up with adjustment being done on the verge of tolerance (although not sure about it as one mechanic sad the top of the beam should be between two red light of the testing tool and the other that it is fine with it just touching the bottom blue line marked 2.75%). after closer inspection I spotted that the adjustment scre's head has been completely demaged and there is no way it can be adjusted again!and the funny bit was when I heard that they did me a favour by demaging the headlamp as thay could have said no and refused the service! (as if they were the ony garage in the area).... so if you book fro test fine but should there be anything to repair - avoid.

      moral of the story don't use National Tyres and if you do check any locing wheels nuts and the tool

      I had two new tyres fitted on my car by National tyres hassocks branch on the 22nd of
      September last year When I had my car servicedin April my garage commented
      that the tool to remove the Locking when nuts was damaged and the wheels
      could not be removed from my car, I went back to the depoty Depotto
      ask them to remove the nuts as they were the last people to remove the
      wheels when they has fitted the tyres, they also could not get the nuts off
      and accepted no responsibility for the damage. They are the only people to
      change the wheels and I am now left in the situation where if I have a flat
      tyre the car will be immobilized, this would be extremely inconvenient and
      probably dangerous depending on the situation.

      The person in the depot said I would need to get the nuts removed which
      again will be very inconvenient and probably expensive. I used National
      Tyres as they are a major company and also local but this is not the
      response that I expected.

      I subsequently emailed the head office who initally said that they would pay for the nuts to be removed
      at thier expense but then backtracked on this and said they would pay for a new tool to revove the nuts from Volvo. I do not have the serial number of the locking nuts as this is a second hand car so volvo cannot supply the replacement.

      in the end I paid £118 at another company to have the nuts drilled out

      moral of the story don't use National Tyres and if you do check any locking wheels nuts and the tool before and after they work on your car.

      Excellent professional service from a company that appears to care

      I feel the need to balance some of the reviews that I have seen on here. I have been using the Welwyn Garden City branch of National for a couple of years and am delighted with the service received.
      I have always ordered the tyres online, and on getting to the branch the tyres are there and ready to fit. The staff have always been polite and professional and no issues with the tyres fitted (8 so far as I drive high mileage). They have also done the tracking on my wife's car with no issues.
      I also needed to call head office to resend a receipt that I had misplaced. The lady on the phone dealt with me professionally and quickly. 2 minutes later she had located and re-sent the receipt.
      I would heartily recommend National for tyres. Compared to many of the other fitters I have used over the years they are much better.

      National disaster... avoid at all costs.

      National Tyres, Hamilton. Left the car in at 9.15am on Saturday morning after calling on Friday evening to say that the car would definitely be coming in as the handbrake was going up to 10 clicks so I had asked for a full brake inspection. After having it all day on Saturday they still hadn't looked at it by close of business so left it with them overnight after being told if left it overnight they would "definitely" sort it. I had to pick it up at close of business on Sunday still un-fixed because they didn't have the parts. Not only wasn't the handbrake not fixed it was left completely disconnected which I didn't find out until after I had left the branch and I had to stop at a set of lights on a hill - yes that's right they sent me out telling me that the handbrake was seizing on one side and a set of clips were broken on the other and they didn't have the parts but they omitted to tell me THEY HAD LEFT WITH NO HANDBRAKE AT ALL!!!. In my personal opinion the Hamilton branch are at best apathetic at worst down right dangerous. Trading standards have been informed!

      National Tyres have wasted my time and my money - I won't be returning

      After a puncture I had a new tyre fitted at National Tyres in Folkestone. After this the steering wheel started to shake quite violently at 60-70 mph. I went back and they told me I needed alignment done. This was done and I was charged accordingly. However, the problem continued - so I went back AGAIN and this time they did the wheel balance - told me I should have it done on all 4 tyres - and charged me accordingly. I asked them if the wheel balance had been out and they told me they can't tell me because its all done by machine.

      I came away and AGAIN the same problem persisted.

      Today I instead went to ATS and told them my problem ... got much more friendly service - they were able to tell me that the balance WAS out - and they have fixed the problem !! The charge was just £13.98 to balance the two front wheels.

      I won't be going back to National Tyres again ... They have wasted my time and my money and were so disinterested.

      Took my car to National Tyres and Autocare in Street, Somerset yesterday because the exhaust was noisy. They said the middle box needed replacing. No problem with that. However, they also said my 2 front tyres and rear offside were 'illegal and needed replacing immediately'. I was surprised as the car had had a major service a month ago. I went immediately back to my garage and MOT centre (part of the Good Garage Scheme). They double checked the tyres and said there were about 3500 miles left on them before they would be illegal - about 6 months with the miles I drive. I would advise anyone to get a second opinion before allowing National Tyres and Autocare to do any extra work they claim is needed.

      Went to maidstone branch to take advantage of £15 tracking offer to be told that both track rods were siezed require heating and replacing at cost of £110 said no thanks went to another place had to wait an hour as they were busy job done no heating no new parts just tracking adjusted with no problems told the story to person who adjusted it and he said from the looks of it no one had even tried to undue it as threads and nuts were still dirty. beware just seem to be out to make up false claims about new parts needed when in fact nothing wrong with them.

      Cannot trust them

      My main problem is my car went in for its MOT at the Guildford branch, and it failed.

      They said that it failed because:
      1) both headlamps aim are too low
      2) offside rear brake binding
      3) offside rear brake disc in such a condition that it is seriously weakened

      I was quoted £185 each for the brake calipers and the other items totalled £292, so a total of £652 was quoted.

      I did not accept this and took the car away.
      I drove it to another test centre on 10th October and told them what work I would probably require.
      They carried out the MOT before any work took place to see if the calipers required changing.
      They passed my car and said
      1) my headlamps are aligned fine
      2) my calipers passed
      3) although my offside rear brake is worn and my disc is rusty, they are within the legal measurements and are just advisory items

      So, I feel that I cannot trust the National Tyre centre at all. This is very disappointing after the first excellent work and service I received when I had my tyre changed there.
      I feel as if they were trying to carry out work which did not require doing, and that they hoped that I would have the work carried out straight away because it had failed the MOT.

      I hope that they will look into this matter and actually do something about it. Time will tell. They still haven't confirmed that they have resolved the first problem. I booked the MOT online for the Saturday before at 12pm. When I got there, they told me that they do not have MOTs at 12pm, the last one is at 11am. So, I had to go back the next week.

      In all, a very disappointing experience.

      GOT SHOCKIES DONE THERE IN NOVEMBER FOR MOT ALSO DONE THERE HAD KNOCKING EVER SINCE TOYOTA SAID THEY PUT WRONG ONES ON SO WENT BACK YESTERDAY THEY SWAPPED THEM FOR WHATS SUPPOSED TO BE RIGHT ONES LEFT THERE WITH EVEN LOUDER AND A PERMANANT NOISE THEY SAID WAS THEN THE BUSHES, WENT TOYOTA TODAY THEY CHECKED IT OUT COZ NOISE WAS SO BAD , WRONG SHOCKIES AGAIN AND NOTHING WRONG WITH BUSHES IT IS NOW COSTING ME £329.00 TO PUT RIGHT SO TOYOTA DOING ME A REPORT AND GIVING ME OLD SHOCKIES SO I CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH TRADING STANDARDS TO COMPLAIN TO THEM I WILL NEVER USE THEIR COMPANY AGAIN AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW NOT TO USE THEM AS I AM DISGUSTED AT THE SERVICE YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO TRUST COMPANIES TO DO THE JOBS YOU PAY THEM FOR.

      Rather late in posting this message, only just come across the site.
      In 2010 I purchased 5 new tyres for my Rover 75, balancing and tracking inc; the chap was very pleasent so I sent a thank you to Nationals Head office, no reply was sent to me.
      12 months later in 2011, I noticed uneven wear on two tyres, so I went back to National in Accrington, a different chap was in charge and after I had explained the situation he simply said "2 new tyres required and you will not get many miles out of the others, how many tyres do you want, the more tyres you want the cheaper I can do it." It never concerned him that I wanted to know why the wear had taken place. feeling un-easy with his attitude, I thanked him for his time and went to Halfords Blackburn for their opinion which was very helpful and I have been going there ever since for all my cars needs. It is now June 2012 and I think I now may need 1 new tyre which will be from Halfords Blackburn 10 out of 10 to this Centre.
      After reading this sites comments on National I had to add my overdue review, I certainly will never step inside a National Tyre Centre again.

      Excellent service and value for money

      The original exhaust on my 12 year old Avensis caused an MOT fail. The garage doing the MOT wanted £365 to fit the full system replacement which I declined and started to look online to see what was available - this turned out to be a bit of an eye opener.

      First, it seems that as my car was registered before March 2001 which means that I did not need the "type approved" (read more expensive ) version of catalytic converter declared essential by the original garage.

      Next I found a great site online (www.cats-direct-shop.co.uk) that is easy to use to find and price up the component exhaust parts for your car (in my case £222 for the type approved version and £135 for the non approved version). This is a helluva difference 'though of course, I still needed to get it fitted - so armed with this new found info I went down to my local specialist(s).

      ATS is nearest so went to them first - quick, helpful and approachable but wanted £415 for the non approved version. Next was a Unipart stockist garage - really unhelpful, just a cursory look at the exhaust and didn't price the job just asked what else I'd been quoted and said that's about what he would do it for! After this went to Kwik Fit - really swanky facilities with like a coffee shop layout with s/s tables and chairs and flash vending machine for its waiting area (completely empty). Guy was helpful if a little aloof and this was the only outfit that actually provided a written price on a nice little pre printed sheet with a check of tire tread depths also. However, the measurements for the treads were wrong (had fronts down to 3mm when are really 6mm) and exhaust price quoted was £514 (guess they have to pay for that swanky seating area somehow!)

      At this point I was starting to think the unthinkable about getting the exhaust online and having a go at fitting it myself. Finally went to National Tyres and Autocare at Rock Ferry. They were really busy but sorted me out within 15 minutes - very friendly and approachable - invited me to look under the car and showed me the problem and why I needed the full exhaust and even helped to identify the souce of an annoying oil leak I'd been aware of for some time previously. Price quoted was £250 with 3 years guarentee. To get this there was a promotional offer running of 20% discount off plus a little bit of extra haggling. Result!

      I was pushed for time so agreed to go back later whilst they arranged to get the parts. When I returned a couple of hours later everything was ready and I watched them whisk of the old exhaust and fit the new. Whole process took around 45mins and would have been quicker if Jack (guy doing the work and presumably the senior guy) hadn't had to keep breaking off to answer the phone for price enquiries (not a complaint on my part just an observation).

      During my time there I saw and heard Jack and the other guys deal with quite a few enquiries and fit tyres / repair punctures etc and was really impressed with how they all conducted themselves - with efficiency, confidence, knowledge and an enthusiastic frendliness which is extremely rare anywhere these days let alone in an automotive "shed".

      Coming from the service industry myself, I have high standards and expectations of customer service. I'm also a bit of a grumpy git and usually only complete this type of review to warn others when I have received poor service.

      However, credit where it is due. National have provided me with a complete new exhaust at a fair and competitive price. Moreover, the management and employees of the Rock Ferry branch should take pride in the team currently working there. After this and previous experiences, I have no doubt that they are amongst the best, if not the best, at what they do in the area and have no hesitation in recommending them to fellow local motorists. I will certainly be making this my first port of call for any tyres, brakes, exhaust, MOT etc. work on the cars in our household in the future.

      Booked and paid for my MOT. I got an email asking me to call them. They explained they couldn't fit me in the day I had booked. So they booked me in the following week, 6.00pm on the day before, I got an email saying they could not fit me in and to go to another branch 10 miles away.When I called, they said they had no idea why I could not go to my local branch and that they could not check if I was booked in or not.Real cowboys.

      Went to have tracking done at west brom centre, my car passed mot a week before with no probs, then the guy in charge says exhaust needs changing, front brakes n discs need changing and all 4 tyres need changingw?????? All tyres on my car a legal my exhaust is fine and so are my brakes, just tryin to rip me off, if I wanted or needed that work done I wud, but it passd mot on all those things a week before, I declined all this and just stuck to no thx just the tracking which was all I wanted done, but they make up that things are wrong when they aint just to scare u into spending money. Neva agen. Chemix are the best no hassle they just do what u ask an nowt else.
