Disadvantages: Extortionate price, chauvinistic attitude

I took my Vauxhall Astra to the Langside Glasgow branch of National in May 2008 as I needed a new tyre quickly. Unfortunately the only positive aspect of my experience was that they did do the job quickly. I was told it would cost £97.50 to fit a single, middle of the range tyre. When I looked shocked, the guy told me "Well, it's quite a big tyre". I drive a 2003 SXi CDTI 1.7 Astra, which takes bog-standard, completely average tyres (even I know that). I said I thought it was a bit steep for a single tyre and would he accept £80? He laughed and said "look hen, don't try and tell me that you know more than me about what tyres are worth!" I would have walked out there and then if I hadn't desperately needed the tyre, so I reluctantly handed over the £97.50. I can't help wondering if I was a man how different my experience might have been.
