Advantages: Cheap, cheerful, nationwide recovery

Disadvantages: They try to bump up the price on your 'renewal', so cancel and reapply

I'm one of those people who get in with a company and tend to stick with their service (providing they do things right!).

RAC are a great example of a company that do things right, the only negative, I'll touch on later.

I first learnt to drive with their partner company BSM. When I passed my driving test, they gave me a years free RAC breakdown cover, which was great!

12 months later, a renewal came through for £52! the website offered new customers the same policy for £33, so I rung up, cancelled my direct debit and took up a new policy.

Another 12 months later, I bought a new car, and old 106 Rallye, prone to breakdown. It broke down twice in as many weeks, RAC were great, picked me up within an hour and towed me to a recommended garage.

The first time was great, clutch cable had snapped and he sorted it out for me, only cost a few quid for the parts, well pleased.

Second time, a different guy towed me to one of his 'mates' garage, who ripped me off. I spent £200 at the garage and NOTHING got fixed, it had to go to peugeot in the end, which was another £400. Probably not the RAC blokes fault, but I couldn't help but get suspicious he got a couple of quid. I paid £200 for diagnostics and diesel, supposedly.

If you're buying RAC cover, avoid getting the basic cover and go for Solution1, purchase this through cashback websites and get £22 off your policy.

Remember to cancel at the end of each year and take up a new policy, it's a real shame they try to bump up the price for the second year, but nothing to stop you cancelling and starting up again,. saving some pennies :)

Summary: A good breakdown cover overall, I've used twice and I'm satisifed.

Maybe they have changed?

Buy through Quidco or Cashbackkings and get £21 cashback :)

The most basic cover works out as £11 a year, but upgrade to the next one, well worth it, trust me!

The cost of my cover actually went down this year by 10% becuase I hadn't called them out in the past 12 months. :-)
