I wanna tell you a story about the RAC.................
I'm at work, miles away, partner and children on school holidays, lunchtime, bored so decide to visit shop on local industrial estate approximately 8 miles from home. They arrive, duly shop etc and return to car to come home. Upon pulling away, partner and children hear a thud from beneath the car, investigate and discover that the exhaust has come away and is trailing on the ground. Not to worry thinks my partner, I'll call the RAC and be sorted in no time....How wrong can she be? Very, very as it turns out........
Initial call to RAC - 2.10pm and takes 10 minutes to get through, then proceeds to give exact location to operator, along with details of the problem. Operator tells partner can't locate her and that she has obviously got her location wrong! Partner repeats location, simply to be told the operator is at the other end of the country and can't be expected to know 'everywhere'!! Operator then proceeds to tell her 'they will 'tie' exhaust up to get her home' and that someone will be with within an hour. This is at 2.30pm.
3.30pm along comes Mr RAC in his shiny little van. So far, so good(ish). He is about to tie the exhaust up but my partner asks 'is safe to do, given that the break is directly beneath the fuel tank?'. Hmmmm he ponders, 'probably not' is the response. He decides she and the girls will have to taken home and the car towed home. Unfortunately, his shiny little van can't be used. No problem, he will call the tow truck, and ensure it is given utmost priority as she is alone with two small girls, its getting dark and has started to bucket down with rain. No more than half an hour, she is told......
4.00pm she calls the RAC to see what's happening? On its way, any minute now.....
4.30pm call to RAC,whats happening? On its way, any minute now.....
5.00pm call to RAC,whats happening? On its way, any minute now.....
5.15pm I receive a call from her, near to tears (rage/frustration)
5.25 will I call RAC? Okay, I do so...whats happening? on it's way, should be there now....I state its been on its way since 3.30
To cut a long story short -it eventually turns up at 6.40pm and they eventually arrive home at 7.10pm - 5 hours after contacting the RAC.
I spend 5 months getting nowhere asking for an explanation, so decide to go to Customer Service Director, who is not available. He does however ring back as promised next morning, full of apologies and offer of 3 months extended membership. I state that this is a somewhat derisory offer after the appalling treatment during the incident and the fact it's taken 5 months to get an apology....we receive 4 new membership cards, and a cheque for £40 to cover the endless phone calls, emails etc.
We've been with Green Flag ever since and really wouldn't recommend RAC to anyone.
Summary: Not for us after this escapade....

- 18/11/08 That sounds like a nightmare, I'm with RAC though never had to use them yet.
However, I had a very similar story to your when broken down and with Green Flag, over 200 miles from home.
It took several hours and calls before someone finally brought me home and a lot of complaint afterwards, though not five months.
I suppose there's problematic service with any company but it sounds like the RAC really went badly wrong for you that day! |

- 18/11/08 Have to say I've always had great service from the RAC but yours sounds appalling! |
