I have been a member of the RAC for several years now and fortunately have never had to use them, that was until yesterday when after going shopping i returned to my car turned the key and yes youv'e got it the car didn't start. Being a person with limited car knowledge i went back into the supermarket and asked at customer services if they had jump leads and someone who could help. A kind security guard offered me the use of his battery and then followed me to my car where i turned the key and he quickly informed me that it's not the battery thats dead as things are turning in the engine but it sounds like nothing is firing. so i waved him farewell and relieved that i remembered i had joined the RAC and had put the contact details in the car i proceeded to phone them.

My call was answered straight away by a very helpfull gentleman who took details of where i was located, what type of car i had and a general what was the problem. I was then told that someone would be with me within 45 minutes which i fealt was not bad timing. After about 10 minutes i recieved another call from the mechanic who asked some further questions i.e. where abouts in the car park was i and asked me to keep a look out for him. He then told me that he would be 25 minutes. But to my great pleasure he arrived within the next 10 minutes and was a really pleasent man who you could tell had been doing the job for years as he knew his way around the car.

He tried the key, looked around the engine then attached his computer to the one in the car and got a diagnisis from it. He then knew where abouts to look on the car to fix the problem, fixed it within another 10 minutes and took the time to wright the error codes down for me so that i could take it to the garage and have the part replaced as it was on it's way out. It turned out to be a "camshaft sensor" atleast i think thats what it was!

Overall my experience of the RAC was nothing short of excellent and i wouldn't hesitate to reccomend them to anyone!

At the moment the cost to join the RAC is from £28 but will increase depending upon package purchased.

Summary: As pleasurable an experience as breaking down can be.
