I recently moved into my new flat a couple of weeks ago and I had been temporarily staying with my brother and his wife while waiting for the previous tenants to move out and my flat to be ready. I was considering moving some of my things over little by little via public transport, taking one suitcase at a time over a couple of days, but having gone over to my new flat from my brother's a couple of times for various reasons I started to realise it was a bit of a trek and not the best route to be doing with heavy loads as I would have to be up and down stairs at his local train station and then on and off buses, so I decided to do myself a favour and just get a cab with all my stuff to make life easier. I picked Riverside Cabs as my brother told me my parents had used them to get from his place (near Barnes in southwest London) to St Pancras to get the Eurostar and had been happy with it. My mum told me that journey cost her £25 and that is pretty good value considering I paid about £45 when taking a black cab from Kings Cross to his house, which is the same distance. I phoned Riverside Cabs at about 2 or 3 am to book my cab for the morning. I think I booked it for about 8 am. The receptionist when I phoned was polite and made my booking efficiently, repeating back the addresses I gave her so I felt confident that she had noted it all down properly. I was pleased that they had someone to answer the phones at all hours and had availability at such short notice. When I asked her about taking a few large suitcases she suggested a suitable car for me and quoted the price. As I ordered a larger car for my luggage I was told my fare would be £52. I do find that fairly expensive but since it was going to make my life so much easier I thought it was fair enough and I agreed to it as it is quite far from from brother's house to my flat, taking about an hour on public transport as I am in North London near Highbury. The next morning shortly before the time I had booked I saw a large car pulling up outside the house. I was still just getting a few things ready so I didn't go out straight away. At the booked time, I got a phone call from the driver telling me he was there. I was glad they had found the house with no difficulty as it is quite hard to find, as it's a new development which is not yet marked on most maps. The driver offered to help me with my suitcases and picked up the heavy ones to put into the boot. I asked if I could pay by card and was told that I could but there would be a surcharge, the driver said that he could stop at a cash machine for me if I wanted, to save me the fee. I thought this was a nice offer as he did not have to do this, and it makes his journey slightly longer which he obviously does not earn more for since it is a flat fare and not on a meter. During the journey the driver made a bit of pleasant small talk but not too much and let me sleep for a lot of the journey (I was really tired as I only had a couple of hours sleep - I had been up drinking wine for ages with my sister in law!) I do really appreciate it when taxi drivers don't go on and on when the passenger is clearly tired. On arriving at my flat, there was a problem with the middle door as the keys didn't seem to work and some neighbours in the flat under ours were also arriving and having problems with unlocking this middle door, so it was a bit chaotic. The driver waited to see that I was actually able to get through the blocked door and he had a go at helping with the very stiff lock until another neighbour came to sort it. Amazingly the driver offered to take my really heavy cases up to my flat on the top floor without me even asking him. I was so grateful for this. I had been considering asking him to do this and thinking I would probably have to offer him extra for it as it was a pretty difficult job due to fairly narrow stairs and the bags being extremely heavy. I felt that he really provided a top service by doing this and including it in the fare (I did give a tip for this!) Overall I was very happy with the service from Riverside Cars and I would use them again. I found them reliable, polite and willing to go above and beyond the bare minimum. Comparing this to a rubbish experience my flat mate had with another cab company which just did not turn up for a 5 am booking she had when she needed to go to the airport, Riverside Cabs is definitely a number worth saving for those times when you need a decent cab company in London.
