I recently sent a letter to a company using first class recorded delivery. There was no value to the letter but I needed to be able to prove that the company received it.

I paid the 26p 1st class postage and the 60p recorded fee and was issued with the receipt. It states on the receipt that you can ring Royal Mail two days after posting and they will be able to confirm the date it was delivered and I would also be able to request a copy of the signature.

I rang them 2 days later and was told they had no details as yet and to ring in another 2 days. Again they had no details so I tried another 2 days. This went on and on for over a week until Royal Mail finally admitted that they didn't know where my letter had gone.

I decided to ring the company I had sent it to and enquire if they had received it.

I felt very silly when they told me that had it the day after I posted it.

I told royal mail about this. They sent me a reply which I just couldn't believe.

They said "Due to the amount of mail that is received by the company you sent your letter to, we are unable to obtain confirmation of delivery and signatures for recorded delivery items".

They did refund me the postage but no additional compensation and no apology.

I take their letter to mean that the Recorded delivery service is pointless if you are sending your letter to a company. However if you fork out the £3+ fee for special delivery they state they will guarantee a signature for you!!!
