More Strikes - but don't blame the postie (Royal Mail)

Advantages: cheap letter delivery

Disadvantages: some failings in the system, terrible management

Yet again, the heavy-handed management at Royal Mail have forced the workers to take action against the "powers that be" over unfair business practices. The royal Mail have been trying to shut the Copperas Hill sorting office for years and move it to Warrington and although this move was rejected, the management have been causing "problems" for the workers there whenevber they can. It is no coincidence that Liverpool was "chosen" to handle the mail from Watford (at the other end of the country) due to a dispute there - again about unfair working practices.

Although there are a million items a week getting "lost", the service is generally reasonable. Due to the volume of mail, first and second class mail usually arrive at the same time so now I feel it's time to have just one service, at second class rates of course.

What I find unfair from the Post Office is that when things get "lost in the post", the maximum we are ever paid for compensation is 100 x 1st class post = £27.00. No wonder businesses are turning away from the Royal Mail. There are various schemes for insuring mail against lost and theft but not enough info is made available. Ever tried using the Royal Mail web site? It is useless, hard to navigate and if you use the contact form online, you get a very low chance of ever getting a reply and even then, it is not always an answer to what you have asked them!

I'm not a postal worker and nor do I know anyone working for them but the posties are getting a raw deal from their bosses and their unions aren't doing much for their members either by the look of things. The posties are out in all weathers and some are paid a fraction of what they should. Management should have a more realistic rate and have their pay cut as they clearly couldn't organised an orgy in a brothel!

Unfortunately, I am one of the poor individuals that works for RM. Or at least until I hand my resignation in on Tuesday. I have never worked for such a badly managed, unprofessional company as this.

The strikes obviously caused a lot of hassle, but I don't blame the posties in any way. RM were making a change to the terms and conditions of the posties contracts (which buggered up their shift patterns somewhat)and they were understandably not happy.

Well done, Körperverletzung, very good opinion, I look forward to reading some others of yours.

I agree completely.

The story I got on this from a postman in one of the striking offices is: Last week there was an official strike at Watford, I'm not sure what over, but probably workload or pay or something. The mail from Watford was sent to Liverpool. They refused to touch it as it was mail from a striking office (Black Post, I think they call it!). So two people from Liverpool were suspended. So Liverpool went on strike - fair enough. Their mail, plus the original mail was sent back to Watford. Watford refused to touch the Black Post form Liverpool. So, again, two people were suspended. Now Watford are back out on strike. I know several people who work for Royal Mail and they all think this - The Management want them to go on strike, they want there to be trouble. They want the public to lose sympathy with the workers so when they wind it all down for privatisation and jobs go, it won't seem like it was a bad thing. You speak to any postie and you will find that there is great unrest at the moment. This IS down to bad management, and is not the fault of the posties themselves. I for one am behind them. I heard a big boss man on Radio 4 yesterday morning who enraged me completely with his attitude and slamming of the people out on strike. Royal Mail are out of order this one!

Sorry to rant - I don't even work for them and it gets my back up!

Sorry to rate low, but you appear to have been misinformed on some matters. If you fix, or add further info, then I'll come back and re-rate. My email address is on my profile page.
