Advantages: Excellent service, great value
Disadvantages: None I can think of
I have been a member of the AA for many years and I think it is a must have if you own a car. The prices of AA cover vary depending on the type of assistance you want to be covered for - the most basic package can be bought online from their website for £28 a year! I think this is incredibly good value for money - plus if you go through a cashback site like quidco as I did you can often get £21+ cashback meaning you get the basic years cover for only £7!! Fantastically good value.
The basic cover (£28 per year) entitles you to call out the AA when you are outwith a 1/4 mile radius from your home. They will attempt to fix your car at the roadside and if they cannot then you will be towed to the nearest garage. You can choose to have cover for your car or you can choose to have personal cover which means you can call them out no matter what car you are travelling in. There are various other types of cover which offer services such as relay (where you choose the garage your car is towed to) or homestart (where you can call them out to your house if your car breaks down at home) at an additional premium (£69-100 per year for these).
I have personally had to call out the AA twice over the years and each time they have been excellent. The first time, I had broken down on my way home from work. I was on my own and it was quite late at night on a dark road. When I called up the breakdown line I was clearly quite frightened and distressed but the advisor helped to keep me calm and assured me that someone would be sent immediately. No more than 10mins later the big yellow van arrived with a friendly chap inside who was actually able to fix my car within around 20 mins. He was very professional, friendly and seemed like he genuinely wanted to help which was nice. I used them again a few years later when I had broken down on my way to work one afternoon. Again, the patrol van arrived within 10-15 mins max and as he wasn't able to repair my car he towed me to a garage and even dropped me off at work a few miles down the road after!
I have no bad things at all to comment on about their service. As long as I own a car I will always make sure I have AA cover as I think they are the best of the bunch and this type of breakdown cover is completely priceless when you think about what you would do in the event of a breakdown. As the advert says, for less than the price of a pair of jeans for an entire year! Money very well spent in my opinion.
Summary: If you have a car you should have this
