UPS - United Parcel Service is a company that I have had dealings with on a number of occasions - and I have to say that I have never been less than 100% impressed with the level of service they provide. For sending large, bulky items almost anywhere in the world, they really cannot be beaten. The distinctive brown Dodge vans can be seen from Tooting to Timbuktu... and this level of coverage really isn't offered by anyone else. Want to send a washing machine to Uzbekistan? want it there within three days? no problem! (If you're willing to pay!) UPS was the first company that I know of that provided on-line tracking of parcels. When your parcel is picked up, the man from UPS takes out a small electronic gizmo which he carries about with him at all times it seems. (They wear them on their hip when they are not in use) and this wondrous device performs allsorts of different tasks - one of which is producing tracking labels. A label is attached to each package in the consignment, bearing a barcode as well as a readable code, and you are given a duplicate copy for your records. You then sign the gizmo with the magic pen (to verify that everything was labelled correctly and the packages were picked up) before paying the nice man, and then (very carefully - more so than with any other courier I know) he takes them away and arranges them inside the back of the spacious UPS van. Then you just sit back and wait... Using the tracking number, you can log onto the UPS website and find out exactly where your parcel is. Each time it passes through a UPS 'checkpoint' and someone runs one of those gizmos over it, the tracking position is updated, so you can track the progress of the parcel around the world (or the country even - although the real strength of UPS is international delivery). Delivery is prompt (They'll pay compensation if it is late) and I've never known any instances of co
rrectly packaged items being damaged in any way - no matter how far they were sent. There are very few companies that come anywhere near to the standards set by UPS. They really are, in my opinion, the benchmark by which all other courier companies should be measured. The service is very expensive... but as the slogan of another well-known courier company says, they do "keep your promises".

- 28/12/06 UPS attempted to deliver a package to me before Christmas, but there was a fee due on it from import so they wouldn't leave it, but they left a note saying they would return on a certain day. I waited...and waited, phoned to see how long they'd be, was promised they'd definitely be with me by 5pm, so I waited....and wasted an entire day of my christmas holiday instead of having some quality time with my children! I phoned again, to be told they weren't sure where the package was as the driver hadn't scanned it in...so so much for those little barcode sticker things! They tried to contract the driver, but he had his phone turned off, then they finally found the package in their depot, and promised that it would be with me by 9am the following day... it wasn't! I had to phone up again after 9am to complain yet again...How many times can one company tell you 'sorry' Their service is disgusting...I'll NEVER pay to use them!! |
