Advantages: Dealership close to home

Disadvantages: One pre-booked car wasn't available to test drive

Replacing a car can be very stressful. The most difficult decision is 'what car' to buy. My husband and I decided that we would make a list of all the cars we fancy, visit the dealerships and then make a short-list. This review is intended to give you an idea of how we found the dealerships, in this case Volkswagen, as potential buyers. How we were treated and what their service was like. We cannot comment on after-sale service as we have not experienced it yet (we are still in the process of whittling down our short-list).

My husband and I looked up the local Volkswagen dealership on the internet, found that it was very close to home, typed in the post code on the Sat Nav and set off for our visit. When we got there we found that they do not have their own customer parking. Luckily there is paid parking in the parking garage under the building. (We were given a card at Volkswagen to exit the parking garage free of charge when we left).

Once inside we were asked if they could be of any assistance. We declined as we wished to first have a glance at the vehicles on display and I was immediately attracted to the Tiguan. Once we had decided what we were interested in, a salesperson was on hand to help. There is a small area where you can sit and wait for your appointment, and a variety of tea, coffee, water and soft drinks is available to waiting customers. The salesman was helpful and polite and quickly booked an appointment for us to test-drive the Tiguan, Golf and Touran the following week.

We arrived for out test drive and were asked to wait a couple of minutes while the salesman got the cars ready for us. Unfortunately only the Golf and Tiguan were ready for us, so we had to bypass the Touran test-drive. I found it quite interesting that we had to sign a form stating that we would pay any damages in excess of £300 should we be involved in any sort of accident (this is the only car manufacturer that as asked us to sign such a form).

After the test drive the salesman had a chat to us about various options, but I was impressed that he put no pressure on us to make any commitment.

As far as service goes I would say that Volkwagen is average. We were treated well, but no extra effort was made to keep us happy as potential clients.

Summary: Average service at Volkswagen dealership
