Advantages: Wide network
Disadvantages: None in particular, but check your car
Avis provide car rental around the globe. One of their major benefits is that they have a very wide and extensive network of pick up and drop locations, so that if you are flying abroad, chances are that you will find an Avis desk at the airport or the major cities.
The main competitors for Avis are Hertz and Europcar. I have been traveling around Europe for business reasons in the last 20 years and have been renting cars in many European cities. I used to rent from Hertz, but then realized that Avis offer better deals. I do not rent very expensive cars, and for the middle range, Avis seem to have decent deals.
Although they are an international company, there are regional differences when it comes to one country or another. I remember 12-14 years ago when I was visiting Poland, local staff spoke a poor level of English and at the same time, you would pick up a car from a smoky desk at some Spanish cities. Things have off course changed, but I found that the courtesy of the Swiss employees of Avis is not beaten by any other counterparties in Europe!
One thing I always stress is that you should check your car before taking off and insist that each minor scratch is reported on the contract in order to be sure that they will not charge you for this when you return the car.
Summary: Avis worldwide
