I had arranged to hire a car from Avis when I was visiting Maui.
On pick-up of the said vehicle they took a print of my credit card which was ok. The car went great and we had no problems at all, then I took it back. Only that I had all my documentation that I received from Avis back home, with me, or it was going to cost me a whole lot more than I had been quoted for.

After an awful time-consuming discussion with several different people we finally got it sorted out. Not what I really wanted to spend an afternoon doing, in the sweltering heat, but it learned me for again, if you book before you go take the quote with you, and always check the amount and what you are paying for.

I had a similar experience. Booked the car from the UK, drove (pardon the pun) the price down, by negociating. But was not able to pay for the car over the phone. Arrived at the destination pick up point and had no idea if the deal was realised. They were charging me in Deutsch Marks, not Sterling and suggesting I had a further insurance even though I had asked for fully inclusive back home. Even when you get home it is practical impossible to understand the invoice.
