I happen to think that Iceland would look nice with a little train service running around the island, it's not to be though. Iceland doesn't have any train connections nor does it have a public bus service. If you don't take a car, rent a car or drive a car, then you are left with hitchhiking which is relatively easy in Iceland due to the small population and the fact they know you are a tourist. Occasionally though you might be heading to somewhere which is remote and you don't feel like freezing your butt off on the side of the road.
