Cunard Line

Description: The Cunard Line, formerly Cunard White Star Line, is a British cruise line, operator of ocean liners RMS Queen ... more
Cunard Line ... Elizabeth 2 (QE2) and RMS Queen Mary 2. Cunard had its beginnings in 1838 when shipping magnate Samuel Cunard, of Halifax, Canada, along with engineer Robert Napier and businessmen James Donaldson, Sir George Burns, and David MacIver formed the British and North American Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. For much of the late 20th century and the first few years of the 21st the line's only vessel making transatlantic crossings was the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2. From 2004 the "QE2's" service was limited to cruising (mostly from the UK) and the annual world cruise, while the transatlantic route was taken over by the new RMS Queen Mary 2, the first ocean liner to be built in 30 years and the largest passenger ship of any type. In 2006 she lost the record of the largest passenger ship to the cruise ship Freedom of the Seas, but QM2 remains the largest ocean liner ever built. In 1998, Cunard became one of a number of lines owned by Carnival Corporation, now Carnival Corporation & PLC. On 1 January 2005 the business, assets and liabilities of Cunard Line Ltd were transferred to Carnival plc, ending the Cunard name as a business entity - the name still appears on the side of Queen Mary 2 and sails under the Cunard brand, but it is controlled by Princess Cruises in California.

The only downside to this is that the ship name is not on the souvenirs so on the QE2 that was quite disappointing. Also the first time I went on a Cunard ship I was excited to receive a voucher only to find I could get a free pen, which I already had from the bar. I found that a lot of the activities were not suitable for ... more

Premium Review Cunard Line: White Star Service (3169 words)

My grandparents have taken me on cruises for many years now and after trying cruiselines such as NCL, Royal Caribbean, P&O and Carnival we finally found what we were looking for in Cunard. The line is owned by Carnival Corporation & PLC and occupies the market of the classier cruise line. Cunard's slogan is "The Most Famous Ocean Liners In The World" and although this was probably true with the QE2, I'm not sure that still applies with the new super-liners that other cruise lines are bringing out. Currently there are two liners, the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Victoria, with a Queen Elizabeth to be launched in autumn of 2010. What sets Cunard ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Queen Mary 2 - Fantastic Transatlantic Crossing! (374 words)

We travelled from New York back to Southampton in April this year on board the QM2 and really enjoyed the trip despite being some of the youngest passengers on board at 20 something! We had travelled the opposite direction as a passenger on the QE2 a few years ago and were keen to see how the much larger QM2 compared. Overall, the QM2 is far larger and offers far more space even in the basic inside cabins (which we had). The basic inside 'stateroom' as they call it has a King bed and although small was larger than the room we had previosuly beein in on the QM2. The condition of the fixtures and fiittings and the furniture was also a lot better than the ...  Read the complete review

Just come back from another trip on the QE2,got to say not half as good as the first trip, the standards in most areas have slipped downwards. Also be carefull that you have enough money plus in the account you are paying your on board bill with,as Cunard take debit card ammounts out of your account without you knowing .These are left pending for aleast 7 days. This shows off your balance,so be sure you have enough funds in to cover any direct debit payment you may have ,or you could end up with a nasty shock when you return ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Queen Mary 2 - What a ship! (878 words)

I first sailed on the QM2 on her 5th ever voyage, a caribbean cruise out of Fort Lauderdale in March 2004. Her sheer size is something to behold, docked opposite the Zuiderdam she darwfed the Holland America liner. Boarding could have been smoother, but I believe the port layout didn't help in this case. Port Everglades needs some rethinking, there were three huge ships in port on this day and it was chaos. Once aboard we headed to our inside cabin. We had a double room and found it to be perfectley adequate for two adults for 10days, with lots of closet space and good quality linens. Service at this stage was a bit hit and miss, but always enthusiastic ...  Read the complete review

Sailing the seven seas has been left beind as the foremost mode of transport, as air travel has swelled to take its place. Me - I don't fly, so I always sail and when I do, it's the QE2. It is an experience that will stay in my memory for ever. Each time has been perfectly unique ... and oddly enough, she has been re-fitted inbetween each of my sailing odysseys. On my wall is a framed certificate which congratulates me for being a Star of the Passenger Talent Show; it is my prized souvenir of my most recent transatlantic crossing on this magnificent ship, in September of 2000. Seven whole days, and a stopover in Amsterdam, too. Prior to that, ...  Read the complete review
