Euro Tunnel ... Channel at the Straits of Dover, connecting Folkestone, Kent in England to Coquelles near Calais in northern France. A long-standing and very expensive megaproject that saw several false starts, it was finally completed in 1994. It is the second-longest rail tunnel in the world, with the Seikan Tunnel in Japan being longer, but the undersea section of 39km (24 miles) is the longest undersea tunnel in the world. It is operated by Eurotunnel. Before and during construction it was widely known by the nickname Chunnel.

After the ticket booth came the passport booth, this booth was much easier because it was empty and there was no one to show the passports to. As it turned out the whole procedure was a simple one. We were about 30 minutes early for being called to the train, so we headed into the building for a scout around. At 5am there was very little open, only ... more

Premium Review Euro Tunnel: England v France....England win hands down. (930 words)

This was our first trip through the Channel Tunnel, and we had absolutely no idea what to expect. We had opted to board one of the early morning trains, which were cheaper than the rest of the day, so when we arrived at the terminal it was very quiet. Reaching the first booth we discovered we needed either the receipt for pre paid tickets or to purchase tickets, although there was no information to let you know you'd need this so early on, had we been getting a later train I think it would have been extremely annoying to sit in a queue only to find you need x,y,z documents, which you could have been gathering together whilst waiting. Once the booth operator ...  Read the complete review

The Eurotunnel is referred to by many names, including the Channel Tunnel and the train is referred to as the Eurostar. This epic engineering project was completed about twelve years ago and links the United Kingdom to mainland Europe. I have used the Eurostar many times, mostly to Paris but also to Brussels. Speed, compared to flying and ferry If you want to get from the UK to nearby parts of Europe, the soundness of the decision to use the Eurostar depends on where in the UK you are coming from. If you are coming from London or the Home Counties, then using the Eurostar will almost definitely be quicker than flying, once airport waiting ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Euro Tunnel: Under the sea to France - by car (1866 words)

As a reasonably frequent visitor to mainland Europe I have crossed by various means that strip of water that to Europhiles like me is just an inconvenience and which to Europhobes like just about anyone in UKIP is the last bastion against the end of civilisation as we know it (The English Channel – La Manche - whatever). Since the coming of Eurotunnel, Eurostar and Le Shuttle, all of the other methods of crossing to the rest of Europe have had to get their act together, most especially the ferries, such that now there is little to choose between any of them in terms of convenience or price. Only flying seems to have the winning formula as far as price is concerned and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Eurotunnel - The experience (541 words)

The UK and French governments have divided the operation into 3 main parts & given each to a different operator. 1. Eurotunnel who are the operators who control the trains. 2. Le Shuttle the name of the train service between Folkestone & Calais. 3. Eurostar the train service between London & Paris - Brussels. I tried the journey from Waterloo to Brussels and will be able to relate this experience to you. Before then some history and background to help you make your decision as to whether to travel and if yes how to make it more enjoyable. ***THE PRODUCT*** This review is concerned with the Eurotunnel ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Euro Tunnel: A realised dream..... (1916 words)

***A dream was born*** Stepping back to a time when Bonaparte had finished battling and was just establishing peace with the British, a visionary dream was born. A dream that would continue, fading in and out of realistic possibilities for nearly two centuries. It was in 1802 that a french mining engineer first documented this dream with the first design for the channel tunnel, a tunnel that would make it possible to cross from France to England without use or need for boats. It was an incredible dream and one that even in my own lifetime was felt impossible. ***The history*** Closely following the first evidence of ...  Read the complete review
