Advantages: Great fun, fantastic people, beautiful scenery and all for a pretty low cost

The Green Tortoise is a bus company which takes you on the most random and fantastic holidays you will ever have been on! They're based in San Francisco, USA, and most of their trips take place on the west coast, but there are a number of coast to coast routes as well. Basically, you sign up for a trip, often about a week in length, and you spend this time driving from place to place. They take in a number of national parks, which are nigh on impossible to reach by public transport. At night, you either camp, sleep under the stars, or sleep on the bus. Sometimes you drive through the night, and the bus converts into two giant sleeping platforms, with a few beds hanging from the ceiling and couple of bunkbeds between the two platforms.

A lot of the places you visit are definitely off the beaten track, and you see some truely beautiful places. There are lots of outdoors activities, like hiking, rafting, canoeing etc.... You sometimes visit cities, like LA of Las Vegas, but the focus is on the countryside. Jobs like cooking are shared amongst the passengers.

Green tortoise is a lot cheaper than alternatives like Trek America, and I'd like to think more fun as well! You get an awful lot for your money and have a great time. There's a good mix of people, normally a lot of people in their twenties, but with a good smattering of older folks and the occassional family as well. If you like hiking and swimming in hot pools, this is the holiday for you!
