Merseyrail

Description: Merseyrail is the name given to the electric commuter train network centred on Liverpool in the county of Merseyside. ... more
Merseyrail ... The name was used as the official brand for the network in the days of British Rail, and has stuck through several franchise holders. Merseyrail is one of the most frequent British commuter systems outside London, transporting 100,000 passengers a day, with services running (on average) every 15 minutes during weekday daytime, and 30 minutes at evenings and weekends. Services run on two lines covering the Liverpool suburban area and greater Merseyside, with a total track length of 120 km, 75 miles and 67 stations. The Northern Line links Liverpool with Southport, Ormskirk, Kirkby and Hunts Cross, while the Wirral Line, extending under the River Mersey, links Liverpool with New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port. The two lines are entirely electrified, using a 750 V DC third-rail.

However, you often find that where you're travelling to is just outside a particular zone or area and so you have to pay for 2 zones / areas rather than 1 because it's just outside the zone! I think their fares regarding this need to be revised. It seems unfair for certain journeys. Merseyrail staff are generally quite unhelpful and grumpy. I've never had a smile or a ... more

Premium Review Merseyrail: Quick & easy way to get across Merseyside (490 words)

I rely on Merseyrail on a daily basis for my commute to work. I live in Liverpool and commute to the Wirral. Merseyrail operates across Liverpool and the Wirral and from my experience they have been punctual 99% of the time. Only occasionally have the trains been cancelled and when they have, a very reliable replacement bus service has replaced them. So for punctuality and reliability they get top marks from me. Cleanliness of the trains is also pretty good, there are often cleaners on the train walking up and down picking up rubbish that commuters have left behind. Unfortunately, the commuters leave so much rubbish behind it seems like an endless battle ...  Read the complete review

I live in North Wales but work in Liverpool so until my suggestion of the "Primark Bridge" becomes a reality, I am resigned to a daily commute. I have suggested that Primark fund the bridge of dreams because in North Wales we are blessed with an abundance of Chavs, most of whom are called Britney. In any case, I drive to one of the stations and Park and Ride into Liverpool every morning. Now to be fair the trains themselves are usually on time. I would say 95% of the time, this year they have been on time and only one service cancelled which delayed me by only fourteen minutes. Merseyrail operates two lines, the Northern line which goes ...  Read the complete review

Merseyrail is the train transport network used in the Merseyside area of England, this covers the Wirral peninsula and Liverpool and its various districts. Over the past 5 years or so Merseyrail has undergone massive changes, all of which, as far as i can see, have resulted in an improved service. In days gone past train often turned up late, if at all, and when you got on the train information systems were unreliable and very sparse. Nowadays trains almost always arrive and depart the various stations on time, and onboard the trains, information systems tell you the destination of the train you have boarded, the name of the next station to be called at on ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review An excellent Metro system (534 words)

A lot of the Merseyrail reviews featured on this site are 7-8 years old now and I think the service deserves a more up to date commentary. Merseyrail is today the most reliable/punctual rail service in the UK, with a customer satisfaction rating of over 91% There were early difficulties with the system following privatisation, but it is my understanding that the Passenger Transport Executive, Merseytravel, and its new Dutch partners (with whom it has a long-term agreement to run the rolling stock) has brought about massive improvements. In addition to the improved reliability, much of the rolling stock has been improved also. Although this, I ...  Read the complete review
