As I have reviewed quite a few narrowboat hire bases, their boats and the trips you can do from them, here is a piece on narrowboating in general, which I hope will give you the flavour of what it is like, so that you can decide whether to give it a try. I wrote a few general remarks on my review for Bettisfield Boats, but this is a fully expanded version. Sizes Narrowboats are 6 feet 10 inches wide. It is the width of many locks that determines the maximum beam of 6'10" for universal exploration. Just measure that out in your sitting room or kitchen and you might get a shock. When my best friend invited me on a canal boat holiday, I have to admit that I was sceptical. She’d been last year, and I’d heard the story. Storms, trees down over the canal, freezing rain… didn’t sound like much of a holiday to me. But being a glutton for punishment, I agreed.
