Advantages: cheaper train fares

Disadvantages: does cost £16

A Young Persons Rail card is one of the best purchases you can make if you are under 25 and use the trains at all. It costs just £16 but gives you a third of all your tickets. When you consider how expensive some of these tickets can be it quickly pays for itself. I regularly travel between Edinburgh and Aberdeen and tickets can cost up to £40, but with the rail card I save over a tenner a time, so in just two journeys it has paid for itself.
The card lasts for a year and is quite easy to get, you just need a couple of passport sized photos and some proof of your age. Pick up a leaflet from any train station and get it before you buy another train ticket.
