Advantages: Saves you loads of cash!

Disadvantages: Can only get one up to 25

Since coming to University 5 years ago, the Young Persons Railcard has to be one of my best value purchases. For £16, the card pays for itself in one trip home for me (London to Wales). The standard return fare is about £40, while, with a rail card, this price comes down to about £25.

Available from any rail station, all you need to do is take along a few photos and fill in a simple form. It also says that you have to get your college to stamp it, but I've never been asked to do this - just take something with your date of birth on, just in case.

If you travel quite a bit on the train, and haven't got one of these cards, you are losing money 'hand over fist'.
