Advantages: Cheaper than a car.......and thats it.
Disadvantages: The people the pain the roadworks
Most of you will have used public transport at some time or another and possibly like me have to use it most days. I generally don't have an issue when using trains etc as that is only rare. My main problem is the day to day issues that come with taking the bus.
My local bus service in Edinburgh is apparently one of the best around and up until recently I would have agreed. The recent tram works have caused some major problems mainly with the roadworks creeping up everywhere in the city! The main street in the entire city from which almost all buses go to or from has been closed and this has basically added at least 20 minutes to my journey to work each morning. Apart from the constant gridlock that seems to be happening.
To listen to me you would think it was all the tramworks that were my major problem but at least I know one day that will be over. I don't know if it is the same everywhere but having spent a few months in Liverpool I didn't notice it as much there. I am of course referring to the FUTURE DJ'S OF BRITAIN. The teenagers that take up the entire back of the bus and insist on playing some smurf style remix as loud as they can!!!!! Why oh why do they do it? You love the song? Great, Fantastic, why the need to share it?
These rude teenagers then insist on being loud and nasty to fellow passengers and generally making everybody feel uncomfortable on their journey.
So after the traumatic journey to work I get to have more of the same on the way home. Except OH JOY the bus is even more crowded. This is of course when all the shopaholics of the world decide 'now is the time to get the bus home' They take all the seats after you have been working all day and go on about being 'done in'. Oh boo hoo a hard days shopping was it love? You couldn't have got the bus earlier or just a little later, no no you sit down you DESERVE IT!
So I eventually manage to get a seat and now it's time to get assaulted. I am moving on to the bag bashers. The people who seem to have no spacial awareness whatsoever. Great huge big bags and yet they seem to forget about them. So I will be sitting down minding my own when all of a sudden WHACK! Great big bruise on the arm for me. Instead of waiting until they get to their seat, taking the bag off and resting it on their knees, these people sling it off and round before they reach their seat.
I generally don't have any issues with the drivers and realise how frustrating it must be for them now with all these roadworks. But I have honestly had enough of public transport for now, and it's not so much the transport it's the people I have to share it with. My rant is over for now and I will give public transport 2 stars for being at least affordable and at least getting me there. The tramworks will be finished by 2011 but judging from all the traffic outside my flat it will take me that long to get anywhere.
Summary: I have booked my driving lessons. I've had enough!

- 27/04/09 Totally agree with you about the future DJs - and the neds who think it's oh so clever to smoke on the bus. When London banned smoking on buses the fine was £1,000 and the drivers could radio the police if someone broke the rules. Time for the bus companies to do something similar in Scotland and make public transport more pleasant for all. |
