Advantages: Reasonable cost!

Disadvantages: Accidents

The recent train accident was horrific and a major tradegy, my feelings go out to the families and friends of those injured.

The opinion that i am going to write is about the safety of the railways - all of them!

There are a lot of people who are saying that they do not trust the trains anymore - quite understandably i admitt. But has anyone looked at the figures of death caused by Transport accidents? If you have you may have realised that the trains are one of the safest way to travel!

I have heard people say that they would much rather drive than go by train but why exactly is this. I know that there has been 3 major crashes in the last three years but the amount killed is still lower than that killed on the roads!

So why Choose Cars?

In my opinion i wanted to get across that i am not on anybodys side and i do not want to hurt anybody's feelings but i can only think of two reasons why people would choose to travel by car rather than train after the recent problems

1) They would rather hold there own destiny!
2) They do not realise deaths are higher on roads!

1) This reason is that people - travellers have more faith in themselves as drivers than they do of the railways! This maybe a valid point and i tend to agree but there is always two sides to the story. When you consider how many accidents there are on the roads, eg cars and how many people are seriously hurt or die this is a much higher number than people hurt who travel on trains - remembering trains can hold a lot more people than one car!

2) Maybe people just do not realise that they may be in just as much danger driving a car as they are on a train!

I dont know what makes poeple decide which is safer and i would like to know what you think pls! In my opinion i would still travel by both because where do you draw the line? next nobody will be travelling by aeroplane because they have crashes once in a while!

Hi Stuart,

You have made a fair argument of your views, however, I'm not sure you are aware of the frequency of rail accidents lately. The point people are now so afraid and reluctant to rail travel is due to the sudden increase in accidents due to faulty tracks etc. It's worth comparing figures from ten years ago with those of today...then you will see more of a point to travel by car! Also, the actual percentage in proportion to total numbers of travellers is worth looking at..for example if 10 people were injured in car travel and 10 in train, you may think this even but maybe there were a total of 1000 car travellers and 100 rail travellers...proportionat ely very diferent. I personally am not risking my life on trains at the moment due to the increase in fatalities.

Yes, accidents occur in whatever way you travel, but if there was a reason why these accidents are happening (i.e. faulty lines), which can be fixed, surely people have a good reason to be hesitant.

Just a thought...
